John and Grace Westgate had eleven children - five daughters and six sons. the births of the first six children, born between 1757 and 1768, are recorded in the Tiverton town records. The next three children not documented in Tiverton town records - Mary, Joseph, and William - were born between 1773 and 1776, possibly in Connecticut after John and Grace moved their family there fro Tiverton, prior to their migration to Plainfield, "the winter before Burgoyne was taken." Since Briish General John Buroyne surrendered at Saratoga, New York, on 17 October 1777, the arrival of the Westgate family to Plainfield can be narrowed to the winter of 1776-1777. After settling in Plainfield, their youngest children Benjamin and Hannah were born there between 1779 and 1785.

John married Grace CHURCH on 6 Jun 1756 in Tiverton, Rhode Island. Grace (daughter of Joseph CHURCH and Lydia RANDALL) was born on 6 Jun 1736 in Little Compton, Newport County, Rhode Island; died on 27 Apr 1831 in Plainfield, New Hampshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2. Hannah WESTGATE was born about 1784 in Plainfield, New Hampshire; died on 14 Oct 1858 in Morristown, New Hampshire.

The will of John Earle of Tiverton dated 12 Feb 1718/9, proved 19 March 1727/8, names wife Mary Earle' sons John, Daniel and Benjamin; Dafters (sic) Mary, Rebaco and Elizabeth (no surnames). The inventory of the estate was dated 2 Feb. 1727/8.

An agreement dated 3 March 1731/2 between JohnEarle of Kingstown RI; Daniel Earle of Tiverton; Benjamin Earle' Rebecca Earle, single woman; George Westgate and Elizabeth his wife of Warwick RI divided land of their grandfather Daniel Wilcocks late of Tiverton given by his will to their mother Mary Earle.

The will of Mary Earl of Tiverton, widow, dated 26 April 1735, proved 28 May 1735, mentions "honoured father Daniel Wilcoks;" dau. Mary Earl; dau. Rebeckah Earl; all my children male and female; son Benjamin Earl exec.; cousin Philip Taber overseer.

On 9 June 1735 John Earl of South Kingstown RI sold to brother Benjamin Earl of Warwick RI land in Tiverton which was given to their mother Mary Earl and her children by the will of their grandfather Daniel Wilcocks.

John had taken the oath of fidelity, or Freeman's oath, in Dartmouth before March 24, 1686, but he afterwards removed to Tiverton. Before this removal and in October, 1686, John Sprague, son of John and grandson of Francis Sprague, and Lydia, his wife, conveyed to him all right or claim of inheritance, in "one half of a purchase of Land Lying in ye township of Dartmouth, In ye county of Bristoll, where my uncle Ralf Earl now lives." This was the land which Francis Sprague gave to his son-in-law, Ralph Earle.

In his will, which was executed February 12, 1719, he mentions his wife Mary; sons John, Daniel and Benjamin; and daughters Mary, Rebecca and Elizabeth.

John married Mary WILCOX about 1686. Mary (daughter of Daniel WILCOX and Elizabeth COOKE) was born in Portsmouth, Rhode Island; died between 26 Apr 1735 and 28 May 1735 in Tiverton, Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
