In 1708 he is described in deeds as "of Plymouth, often residing in Middleboro"; in 1708 he is described definitely as "of Middleboro." He was surveyor of highways for Plymouth in 1673; constable for Plymouth, 1668; and two years later was fined 10s for refusing to aid the constable in the execution of his office. He was selectman for Plymouth 1689 and 1691; was ensign in 1694-95. He owned land in Tiverton, Rhode Island. For many years the Southworth family owned large tacts of land in Middleboro, some of the richest and most valuable land in that town belonging to them.
