PRIVATE MARK LADD'S SERVICE FOR HIS COUNTRY REMEMBERED ANEW

The weatherbeaten headstone re-dedicated October 19th in a rural graveyard southwest of Elgin bears this simple inscription:

PVT. MARK P. LADD DIED IN DEFENSE OF HIS COUNTRY
    January 5, 1863 Aged 18 years

"He has finished his cause and is now with the Blesst
May this flag e'er wave o'er this soldier at rest."

Mark Ladd was born in Plato Township in 1844, a son of Nathaniel And Mary Buzzell Ladd. He enlisted in Elgin Company I, 127th Infantry in 1862 and saw action in early weeks of the Vicksburg campaign of the Civil War.

Private Ladd's gravestone was stolen by vandals some weeks ago and discarded along Route 66 near Kingman, Arizona. It was retrieved by a highway patrolman and, with the aid of U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, traced to Prairie Cemetery on Crane Road near Silver Glen Road, St. Charles Township.

There on an autumn afternoon in the presence of American Legion members, Boy Scouts and friends, the grave marker which had been returned 1,500 miles from an Arizona roadside was re-dedicated.

"To the memory of Pvt. Mark Ladd who gave his life for his country 106 years ago."
