"A Collection of Family Records, with Biographical Sketches, and other memoranda of various families and individuals bearing the name DOUGLAS": he was admitted to the church, July 24, 1698. The next year he removed with his wife and two children to "the new plantation on the Quinnebaug, which was afterwards named Plainfield." Here lands were set off to him "on the east side of the river." He also owned lands in Voluntown, which he purchased of his father, Aug. 18, 1715, for "thirteen pounds of good and current money."
He was one of the little company that covenanted together and formed a church in Plainfield, in 1705. The Rev.Joseph Coit was called to the charge of this little flock, and William Douglas was chosen the first deacon. In the old burial ground at Plainfield, an ancient gravestone bears this inscription:----

"in memory of Mr. William Douglas, Who was ye first Deacon of ye churh of Christ in Plainfield who departed this Life August ye 10th A.D. 1719 in ye 46th year of his Age."

Deacon Douglas died in the prime of life, and greatly lamented. All the church and town records, and all but a few files of the probate records, of Plainfield, were consumed at the burning of the town by Arnold, in 1781. Among the probate records saved, was the will of Dea. William Douglas. It was dated july 6, 1717, and proved Sept. 25, 1717. In it he provided for his wife, Sarah, and eleven children, all of the latter under twenty-ine years of age. His wife was Sarah Proctor, but no date of his marriage can be found in the New London records. His eldest two children were born in new London, all the others in Plainfield. His widow, Sarah, was living in 1729, but no record of her death has been found.

The family of Samuel Hough, oldest son of William, is registered at Saybrook, and in connection with the record it is stated that William Hough, was a son of Edward Hough, of West Chester in Cheshire, England. It has not been ascertained that this Edward Hough emigrated to America, but a widow Ann Hough that died in Gloucester, Mass., in 1672, aged eighty-five years, was perhaps his relict, and the mother of William Hough.
William Hough married Sarah, daughter of Hugh Calkin, October 28th, 1635.

The marriage of William Hough and the births of three children, are recorded at Gloucester; the remainder in New London, but it is mentioned that Samuel was born in Saybrook. the father being a house builder might have been temporarily employed in that place.
The last four children of William Hough are not afterward found at New London; it is probable that they were scattered in other towns. Samuel the oldest son settled in Saybrook. Capt. John Hough, the second son, was a noted man of his time, powerful in frame and energetic in character. His wife was Sarah Post, of Norwich, and Capt. Hough was at one tie a resident in that place. His death was caused by a fall fro the scaffolding of a house which he was building in New London, August 26th, 1715. No external injury could be discovered, but he lived only an hour. Such an event was sufficient at that tie to move the whole town.
William Hough, Jun., married Ann, daughter of Samuel Lothrop, of Norwich. He died April 22d, 1705. His relict, Widow Ann Hough, died in Norwich Nov. 19th, 1745.

William married Sarah CALKINS on 28 Oct 1645 in New London, Connecticut. Sarah (daughter of Hugh CALKINS and Ann ESTON) was born on 31 Jul 1626 in Chepstow, Monmouth, England; died on 05 Sep 1684 in New London, New London, Connecticut, USA; was buried in Gloucester, Essex Co., Mass..
