    Notes:

    Name:
He was one of the "ten men of saugus" who are credited with the settling of Sandwich, Massachusetts. The first information of the settling of Sandwich is an item in Plymouth County Records dated April 3, 1637:

"It is also agreed by the Court that those tenn men of Sangust, viz Edmond Freeman, Henry Feake, Thomas Dexyer, Edward Dillingham, William Wood, John Carman, Richard Chadwell, William Almey, Thomas Tupper & George Knott shall have liberty to view a place to sitt down & have sufficient lands for three score famylies, upon the conditions propounded to them by the Governor and Mr. Winslow."

Saugus Plantation, from which most of the sixty founding families of Sandwich had moved, as first settled in 1629 and occupied a huge stretch of land between Charlestown and Salem. With the development of Salem and Boston following the massive influx of settlers in 1630, Saugus became a well-travelled area and increased rapidly in population.

We know very little about George. He and his wife, Martha lived on the land grant immediately northwest of Tobey grant. George died March 1, 1648 in Sandwich. He had a son named Samuel, on whom we have no information, and a daughter, Martha, who married her neighbor Thomas Tobey November 18, 1650 in Sandwich. The land owned by the "widow Martha Knott" on Water Street is clearly marked on the map dated 1667 in the section of this book titled "Where We Lived." Martha died in 1674. Martha Knott Tobey died in 1689. All are buried in Sandwich.
