    ST. ALBANS, Vt. / STUART, Fla. -- Robert P. Bliss, Jr., 80, died unexpectedly, early Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 2004, in Stuart, Fla.

    Mr. Bliss was born in St. Albans, Vt. Sept. 8, 1923, the son of Robert P., Sr. and Edith Tuscany Bliss, both deceased.

    He was born and educated in the State of Vermont. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Kidder) Bliss, who he married Feb. 15, 1947.

    Also surviving him are his son, Jack and his wife Lynnda; his daughter-in-law, Janice Corrigan and her husband Michael; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mary McGarey Madkour of Bennington. His son, Robert G. Bliss, Sr., Esq., predeceased him in 1977; as well as a sister Barbara Counos in 1994.

    Mr. Bliss was involved in a variety of business interests during his lifetime relating to Insurance and Real Estate. He was past member and Vice-President of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Insurance Agents and past Vice-President and Director of the Independent Mutual Agents of New England. He also served on the Boards of Directors of several Vermont companies, including the Union Mutual Insurance Group, Franklin-Lamoille Bank, Banknorth Group, Vermont Mortgage Company, Central Vermont Public Service Corp., Vermont Electric Power Co., and Jay Peak. He also served the State of Vermont as a member of the Vermont Pollution Abatement Authority and the Vermont Industrial Development Authority.

    As he was always interested in Education, he served on the St. Albans School board for several years, was founder and President of the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of St. Albans. Mr. Bliss also served on the University of Vermont Board of Trustees for six (6) years and was Chairman 1984-85.

    Active in Masonic Circles, Mr. Bliss was a member of all York Rite bodies, Past Master of Franklin Lodge 4, F&AM and Past Potentate of Mt. Sinai Temple 3, Montpelier.

    In health related activities, Mr. Bliss served as Chairman of the Kerbs Hospital Incorporators, and subsequently, the Northwestern Medical Center Incorporators. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Shriners Hospital, Montreal, Quebec. He was also a past board member of Franklin-Grand Isle Mental Health, Inc. and the University Health Center, Burlington, Vt.

    Mr. Bliss served in the Pacific Theater during World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps and also served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American veterans.

    During his lifetime he was always active in community affairs -- a member of the Rotary Club for over 50 years and the Elks Club for over 50 years. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

    Funeral Services will be held Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at 10 a.m. from St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 11 Church Street, St. Albans City. The Reverend Oren Lane and The Reverend Marcheta Townsend will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery, Swanton.

    Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Dorothy Kidder Bliss, a resident of St. Albans, passed away on her 87th birthday, Saturday June 25, 2011 at the Northwestern Medical Center ICU following a lengthy illness.

    Dot was born on June 25, 1924 in Swanton, Vermont, the daughter of the late George Kidder and Clara Kinsley Kidder.

    Dot attended schools in Swanton, graduating Salutatorian of the class of 1942. She attended Burdett College in Boston and worked as a medical assistant for Dr. Arthur Gladstone in Burlington, VT in 1945-1946. On February 15, 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Porter Bliss, Jr. in Swanton, VT. In later years, after raising their two sons, Robert George Bliss Sr. and John "Jack" A. Bliss, she assisted her husband in his insurance business, S.S. Watson Insurance Agency in St. Albans.

    In the year that Bob was to be National President of the National Insurance Agents, their older son Robert, a recent graduate of University of Miami Law School, died in April 1977 of leukemia at the young age of 27.

    Dorothy was predeceased by her son Robert George Bliss Sr. in 1977, her husband Robert P. Bliss, Jr. in February 2004 and granddaughter Christi Kelli Corrigan in June 2009.

    Dorothy is survived by her two brothers, Alan Kidder of Rockville Center, NY and Wesley Kidder and his wife Elvy of Swanton, VT, her son John (Jack) and his wife Lynnda Bliss of St Albans, her daughter in law, Janice Corrigan and husband Dr. Michael J. Corrigan.

    She was a very loving and supportive grandmother to her seven grandchildren. Her surviving grandchildren are: Robert G. Bliss, Katy Anne Bliss, Sean Bliss, Jason Bliss, Jamie Corrigan and Casey Corrigan. She also leaves many special nieces and nephews, her McDonalds coffee group and many close friends.

    Dot was a very active member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Phi Alpha Group, United Methodist Women and Kerbs Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary. She was also a Grey Lady at Kerbs Memorial Hospital and a volunteer at Verdelle Village and Holiday House for many years. Dot was a people person and loved to enjoy special times with her close friends and family. She also had a green thumb and enjoyed nurturing a wide array of beautiful house plants and home garden all of her life. Dot was a great cook and hosted many memorable family Thanksgivings & Christmas holiday dinners at their Maquam Shore residence that they loved so much. Bob and Dot enjoyed wintering in South Florida for 25 years and will be missed by all of their southern friends.

    A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 10 a.m. from Saint Paul's United Methodist Church, 11 Church St. St. Albans City. Lay Speaker Mr. Joe Davison will officiate. Committal Services and Interment will be private for immediate family members only in Riverside Cemetery, Swanton. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

    SAINT ALBANS/ SWANTON - A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at 10 a.m. from Saint Paul's United Methodist Church. Certified Lay Speaker, D. Joseph Davison officiated. Music was provided by organist and soloist, Claire Chevalier Hungerford. Special Music was offered by nephew, Patrick White playing the guitar and singing the hymn "All I Ask of You" from the Weston Priory. Niece, Cece Wick read the Twenty-Third Psalm and daughter-in-law, Janice Corrigan delivered the Eulogy. Others offering Special Words of Remembrance were, Judy Grodzinsky, Shirley Elliott, Doctor Michael Corrigan and Burt Paquin Sr.

    Among the many delegations in attendance were representatives from the, Saint Paul's United Methodist Women, Phi Alpha Group, Northwestern Medical Center, including the Auxiliary, Holiday House, Handy Toyota and Handy Chevrolet, The Paquin Group, S.B. Collins and Jolly Associates, Sticks and Stuff, Wood & Kidder, Inc., Linda Kidder Associates, The Total Home Center, Ashley Home Furnishings, Office of Doctor Michael Corrigan, Swanton Village Green Apartments, McDonalds Coffee Group, Saint Albans Rotary, Hannaford's, Swanton Historical Society, Saint Albans Historical Museum, The Heald Funeral Home, XL Construction, The Allen Agency, Tom Hungerford Insurance, National Life Insurance Company, Berg, Carmolli & Kent Insurance, REL Team, Channels 15 and 16 Cable Access, Swanton Village Fire Department and Auxiliary, and Howard's The Flower Shop and Antiques.

    Interment followed at the Bliss family lot in Riverside Cemetery, Swanton, with Mr. Davison reading the committal prayers. The bearers, all Dorothy's grandchildren, were, Robert G., Katy Ann, Sean and Jason Bliss, Jamie and Casey Corrigan.
