    Pioneer Woman Dies at Home in Urbandale

    Mrs. Naomi Slawson Smith, 77,
    for Many Years Active in
    Club Life.

    Ms. Naomi Slawson Smith, one of the pioneers of this section, wife of John H. Smith of Urbandale and mother of Mrs. Charles R. Sylvester of Battle Creek, and who was for many years secretary of the Pioneer society of Barry county, died last night at 8 o'clock at the home at Urbandale, aged 77.
    Mrs. Smith had been in very poor health for several months, and two weeks ago last Sunday suffered a stroke of paralysis.
    She was born December 1, 1845, and came to Michigan with her husband in the fall of 1866, just after she had been married to Ira M. Slawson. After they had been married 19 years Mr. Slawson died October 20, 1885. Mrs. Slawson remained for many years a widow, but September 9, 1910, was married to John H. Smith. She lived in the vicinity of Urbandale for the past 14 years.
    By the first marriage there were four children: Claude L., Mary M., Nettie M., and M. Adda, now Mrs. C. R. Sylvester. Of these the two last named are now living.
    She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. D. C. Reynolds and Mrs. Viola Shumaker, of Starkey, N. Y., and a brother, Joseph D. Meeks of New York. There are also seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
