He lived on his father's homestead at Beverly, Massachusetts, which he inherited. By trade he was a malster. In 1679 he was an overseer, a deputy in 1689, a freeman in 1683, and a representative in 1690. he was a soldier of distinction, serving in 1675 in the war against the Narragansett Indians, and he was one of the men who placed the historic bell in the First Church of Beverly (known as the Bass River Church). This bell was captured at Port Royal, and was the subject of much controversy as to its disposal.
