    DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN

Said to have killed the Last Bear Ever Seen in the Warwick Mountains.

Goshen, N.Y., Aug. 22 - When Gen. John Hawthorne marched with the Goshen militia in pursuit of the Indian Brant, after the bloody Minisink massacre in 1779, he left in charge f his farm in Warwick a man of the name Lott. the General was one of the few who returned from the fatal chase of the bloody Mohawk chief, and the Lott family remained on his farm. Fourteen years later a son was born to them on Sept. 11, 1793. Gen. Hawthorne name the infant John Hawthorne Lott. Last Thursday John Hawthorne Lott died within a stone's throw of where he was born, having lived nearly 101 years in Warwick. Until within a few weeks he was apparently in the best of health. Last march he walked three miles to deposit his eightieth consecutive annual vote at town meeting. Until only a short time ago he worked at his trade of cooper, making cedar tubs, for which he was famous the country round.

In his prim, Lott stood 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was a giant in strength, and noted as a wrestler, jumper, and runner in the days when those accomplishments were greatly the test of a man's standing in the rugged communities of Orange and Sussex counties. No one could approach him in handling the scythe or cradle. He was also a famous hunter and claimed to have killed the last wild bear ever seen in the Warwick Mountains. He killed it in a hand to hand contest, with no weapon but his pocket knife. Lott was an intelligent man and a genial companion. His memory extended with clearness back over ninety-five years. He was the father of nineteen children.
