  1. 1.  John WING was born in 1613 in England (son of Rev. John WING and Deborah BACHELDER); died between Feb 1698/9 and 10 Aug 1699. in Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Name:
He came to America in 1632 with his mother and grandfather Stephen Bachelder, shortly after his father's death in England in 1630. He married, probably in 1645, for his first wife ELIZABETH, who was the mother of all his children. She died about 31 Jan. 1692.

John Wing was one of the founders of Sandwich and his name appeared as 45th in the list. Since, after arriving in America, he had first resided at Lynn with his mother and grandfather it appeared he migrated to Sandwich, Massachusetts with the group from Lynn, which settled there in 1637. It was on 3 April 1637 that the GeneralCourt at Plymouth granted to ten men of Lynn the right to settle Sandwich. John Wing remained there for some few years. In 1641 he was granted six acres of meadow land. In 1652 he was one of thirteen persons selected to lay out a road from Sandwich to Plymouth, but two years later the road was not completed. This seems to be the last record of his being at Sandwich and between then and March 1659 he moved to Yarmouth where at the latter time there is a court record of his building a house. His house was built on land surrounded by swamp or meadow land and later called Wing Island on which a tablet has been erected to his memory.

John wing was a large land owner and at a town meeting on 30 May 1677 he was warned not to purchase land from individual Indians without permission. Apparently the necessary permission was granted for at about that time John Wing and John Dillingham for themselves and their associates were deeded land from the Indians. In 1676 John wing was assessed five pounds sixteen shillings and three pence on account of the Indian War of 1675/6. apparently JohnWing did not hold office, but was interested in farming and land. His second wife was Miriam Dean daughter of Stephen Dean of Plymouth. the youngest son of John and Elizabeth Wing was John.

John married Elizabeth ? in 1645. Elizabeth died about 31 Jan 1692. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
