    Name:
    Thomas, who was the 3rd Lord De la Warr, matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford on 9 Mar 1591/2 and received his A.M. 20 Aug 1605. Sir Thomas was Member of Parliament for Lymington in 1597/8. Thomas West followed Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex to Ireland in 1599, distinguishing himself in action near Arklow and was knighted by Essex at Dublin. he adhered to Essex even during the revolt of 1601 and was imprisoned in the Wood Street counter. Sir Thomas was lucky to be granted the liberty of the prison before the end of February and to be sent to his father's house a month latger on giving a bond of L2,000. Sir Thomas appeared before the Privy Council on 28 Apr 1601, and again in the following month, at which time he was fined 1,000 marks but escaped indictment. he succeeded to his father's title and to estates in Sussex and Hampshire within a year of his release. There was some difficulty about his entering into possession, and in May 1602 Sir Thomas Shirley petitioned Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury that the Queen would grant West "those things which his father enjoyed.. for the young gentleman is left in a most broken estate."

    West described himself as "the poorest baron of this kingdom" in a letter to Cecil, which led him to go to Virginia. he arrived at Jamestown in July 1609, the expedition being just in tine to save the colonists from starvation, and was the first Lord Governor and Captain General of Virginia from 28 Feb 1609/10. It was while on another voyage to Virginia that West died at sea 7 June 1618. Administration of his property was granted on 1 July 1620 to his widow. His eldest son, Henry, aged 14, succeeded. He immigrated in June 1610 to Jamestown on the ship "De la Warr".
