  • Name Hans Adam BUDINGER  [1
    • Hans Adam Budinger married Anna Magarette Hanksknecht 28 Dec 1724 in Durstel, Alsace, Germany where she was born 30 Dec 1690. Hans & Margarette were parents of 5 sons and a daughter by 1737, the eldest being Nicholas, Maria's father. In 1737 the Budinger family left the Alsace region of Germany, traveling by boat down the Rhine to Rotterdam where they boarded a ship named Samuel that was leaving for America. They arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on 30 Aug. 1737 where the family surname is recorded as Bittinger with hans Adam listed as 39 years old and Nicholas as 12 years old. In later years many of the children (including Nicholas) adopted the Bittinger spelling but some stayed with Bedinger and Hans Adam is most often listed as Budinger.

The family soon moved west to Lancaster County, crossing the Susquehanna River to lands that were made available by the 1736 Land Purchase following the Cresap War, which extinguished Indian land claims west of the river. They settled in the Berwick Township area that became York County in 1749 and Adams County in 1800. Hans Adam was one of the fairly wealthy Swiss/German immigrants and he quickly purchased land and became a prominent and active citizen of the area. Magarette died in 1750 and Hans Adam married Anna Marie Magdalena in 1753. They were parents of three sons and a daughter by 1760. Hans Adam died 7 Jul 1769 in Berwick township and is buried in the Abbottstown Cemetery. [1]
