    ROY A. SLAUSON

    HOPKINTON--Roy A. Slauson, 72, a retired farmer of the Sand Springs area who has made his hoe in Hopkinton for seven years, died Sunday morning at 6 a.m. in the Monticello hospital, following a long illness. He had been hospitalized two days.
    Funeral services were held at St. Luke's Ctholic Church, Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Leo O'Connell officiated. Burial was in Sacred Heart cemetery at Monticello.
    Born on a farm east of Sand Springs, Jan. 12, 1887, he was a son of pioneer settlers Douglas and Alice Cummings Slauson. He attended Lenox college in Hopkinton and the Cedar Rapids business college, and was employed by a Cedar Rapids implement dealer for three years.
    He married Marion Egan of Monticello, April 30, 1912 and made their home on the parental Slauson farm for 40 years, retiring to Hopkinton, in 1952. They were the parents of nine children.
    A son, Harry, a naval veteran was killed in an automobile accident in 1945, while home on leave.
    Surviving are his wife, three sons, Louis, Hopkinton; Duane, Greeley; and Donald, Cedar Rapids; five daughters, Velma, Mrs. John White, Worthington; May, Mrs. Joe Gudenkauf and Grace, Mrs. Louis Gudenkauf, both of Hopkinton; Marie, Mrs. Louis Stevens, Dyersville; Joyce, Mrs. Russell Tenley, Olin; and 36 grandchildren. Also thee brother, Vernon Slauson, Texas; Claude and Ed Slauson, both of Williamsburg VA.; and one sister, Mrs. Irene Gilliam of Texas.
    He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and Holy Name society.

    Manchester, Ia. - Henry Douglas Slauson, 24, of Sand Springs, Ia., in southeast Delaware county, aviation ordnance man second class. USNR, home on furlough, was instantly killed in an automobile accident at 4 a.m. Friday town miles east of Sand Springs.
    He was returning from a dance at Worthington with Miss Phyllis DeShaw. At the point where the accident occurred there are two bridges.
    Slauson's car passed safely over the first one, when apparently the machine went out of control and crashed into the guard rail of the second bridge. About 10 feet of the rail was torn off, went through the windshield and struck the navy man in the head, fracturing his skull.
    Miss DeShaw, who suffered only minor injuries, went to a nearby farm home for help.
    Slauson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Slauson of Sand Springs.
    Sheriff Carl Anderson of Manchester and Arthur G. Platt, Delaware county coroner, investigated the accident and Platt said there will not be an inquest.
    Slauson's body was taken to the Hoover funeral home at Hopkinton.

    Marie Stevens, 99, of Oelwein passed away Sunday March 13, 2022 at Oelwein Health Care Center. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 PM on Sunday March 20, 2022 at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein with a Rosary Service beginning at 3:30 PM. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM on Monday March 21, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Fr. Ray Atwood officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein. A memorial fund has been established.

    Mary Marie Stevens was born in Sand Springs, Iowa on June 27, 1922 to parents Roy and Marion (Egan) Slauson. She attended country schools in the Sand Springs area. On November 27, 1943 Marie was united in marriage with Louis Stevens at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs.

    Marie and Louis farmed together at Delhi, Worthington and then for fifteen years at Dyersville. In 1963, they moved to a farm west of Oelwein until they retired. During these years, they were blessed with three daughters. Marie was a loving wife and mother who provided love, guidance, delicious home cooked meals and a witty sense of humor.

    Marie enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, mushroom hunting, dancing and travelling. She loved to host family gatherings to enjoy all her daughters and their families with good food and laughter.

    Marie and Louis moved to Cleveland, MN where they lived on Jefferson Lake for fifteen years, returning to Oelwein in 1987. Many happy memories were made with their grandchildren boating, skiing, fishing, snowmobiling and holiday gatherings. They enjoyed wintering in Florida for twenty years, entertaining family and friends.

    Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Rosary Society, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Rita in Oelwein.

    Left to celebrate Marie's life are her children: Kay (Harold) Gieselman of Oelwein, Karen Gilson of Oelwein and Connie (Daryl) Kaltenbach of Oelwein; her nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; her many nieces and nephews; her sisters-in-law: Mary Slauson of Seattle, WA, Mary Nebel of Dyersville and Grace Stevens of Dyersville.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Louis; her eight siblings; and her son-in-law Gary Gilson.

    Joyce Madeline Tenley passed peacefully at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on September 12, 2020.

    Joyce was born October 4, 1930 to Roy and Marion Slauson in Sand Springs, Iowa. She had a large and loving family with four brothers and four sisters: Velma (John) White, Mae (Joe) Gudenkauf, Grace (Louis) Gudenkauf, Harry Slauson, Louis (Juanita) Slauson, Marie (Louis) Stevens, Duane (Jane) Slauson, and Donald (Mary) Slauson.

    Joyce married Russell Tenley on April 21, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They welcomed three children: William (Suzanne) Tenley, Patricia (Dale) McCrea, Clarence (Anita) Tenley; seven grandchildren: Sarah (Andrew) Dorr, Derek Tenley, Rachel (Dan) Rosauer, Kara (Dana) Byrge, Jack (Jesswa) Tenley, and Page Tenley; and eight great-grandchildren: Harrison and Madeline Dorr; Joseph, William, and Marion Rosauer; and Everly, Elyse, and Eden McCrea.

    Joyce was a loving wife and mother and always thought of her family before herself. She was the kindest person we know.

    A celebration of life will be held May 30, 2021. Family and friends can call the family at a later date for details.

    Don Slauson, a resident of Elma, Wash., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at home, surrounded by his family. He was 81.
    Don was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Hopkinton, Iowa, to Roy and Marion Slauson. He came from a large family of nine and was raised in Iowa, later moving to Washington. On Jan. 27, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Emerson.
    He was preceded in death by his only son, Lon Slauson, lost to the Oso landslide.
    He is survived by his wife, Mary; and three daughters, Lynn, Sandy and Debbie. Don loved his 10 grand kids and three great-grand kids.
    He worked for Cement Masons Local 528.
    There will be no service at his request.
