    Name:
    Col. John West, served as captain, major and lieutenant colonel of militia, 1652-73, loyal to Governor Berkeley during Bacon's rebellion; member House of Burgesses, died testate (will dated 15 Nov 1689).

    He is purported to be the first white child born on the York River, and in consideration of this fact, was granted land at West Point which was entailed for several generations. (Note: His will of 15 Nov. 1689 was probated about 1691/2. it was destroyed along with the other County records in a fire in 1787.) Colonel John West acquired land in the seventeenth century, where he built a fine, small brick Jacobean lodge before 1690, the East dependency of the manor house. It became known as the Elsing Green plantation. Colonel West's son, Captain Nathaniel West, inherited Elsing Green upon his father's death in 1692.

    He lived in "West Point" in the part of New Kent County that in 1691 became King and Queen County and then King William County in 1792. John served as justice and sheriff of King and Queen County in 1692 and as burgess from the newly formed KingWilliam County from 1702-1706. He was named justice and colonel and commander-in-chief of the Virginia militia of King William County on 12 Mar 1701/2, where he owned 1,800 acres there in 1704. John and Judith had one child only.

    He was a justice of King William County, a tobacco agent and captain of militia. Nathaniel represented the county in the House of Burgesses in 1702. He owned 2,000 acres in King William County and 6,370 acres New Kent County. Captain West was voted to serve as vestryman at a Vestry meeting held for St. Peter's Parish at the house of Mr. James Moss on 23 Apr 1703. Nathaniel died after 30 Oct 1723.

    She was an only child, who received Elsing Green Plantation, dower upon her marriage to Captain William Dandridge. Dandridge, a member of the same family as George Washington's wife, Martha Curtis, was a captain in the British navy and fought at Cartagena, St. Augustine and Savannah. Elsing Green Plantation was sold to Carter Baxton upon Unity's death in 1753, who had been born at nearby Newington on the Mattaponi River. Unity Dandridge had a will dated 9 July 753 that is now lost.

    He removed to Surry County soon after his marriage to Mary Herbert, where he built his Windsor Plantation (later in Sussex County). Colonel Claiborne was a burgess (1748, 1749 & 1752), but resigned in 1754 to become clerk of Sussex County. Augustine, who was a Virginia State senator in 1780, was a colonel of the Sussex County militia in 1754 and commander and chief in 1767. He was a member of the Committee of Safety during the American Revolution. Col. Claiborne left a will dated 1 May 1787 that was recorded 17 May 1787 in Sussex County.

    He is described as of Amelia County when he bought 300 acres of land on the south side in Lunenburg County on 6 Oct 1760, but was Dinwiddie County when he sold that land on 11 Aug. 1761. Richard relocated to Mecklenburg County, where he deeded five slaves and the crop on his plantation on 4 June 1810 to his son West. He made these transactions to his son in return fo supporting him and his wife Ann, "they being old and infirm." Richard conveyed the 392 1/2 acres of land where he lived to his sons Roger, West, John and Thomas. Richard had a will dated 5 Sep 1812 that was proved 12 May 1817. Richard Gregory was an American Revolution who contributed supplies and paid a supply tax in 1783.
