    All of the family of John with the exception of his son John, who was absent at the time, were burned to death in the night in their house in 1657. (The son John took advise of his father's estate under the will of his grandfather in 1683.) "Mr. Julius Gay gives the date of the burning of John Hart's house as Dec. 15, 1666."     Born in England and married Sarah. They resided in Farmington, where he was made a freeman by the General Court, at their May session 1654. Sarah, his wife, joined the church at Farmington, Oct. 9th, 1653; he was admitted to the church April 2, 1654. he was one of the first settlers of Tunxis, and bought his house lot of the original owners, and among the list of the eighty-four proprietors of 1672, is numbered the 'Estate of John Hart.' At the October session of the General Court, in 1660, a committee was raised to examine 'Thirty Mile Island,' with the view of settlement, when John Hart, of Farmington was elected one of said committee. His sad and untimely death occurred on this wise, wiz; his house, which was located near the center of the village, was fired in the night by Indians, and he and all his family, with the exception of his eldest son, John, who was that night at Nod, or Northington, since called Avon, looking after the stock on a farm they owned there, perished in the flames. What aggravated the public calamity was the burning of the town records at the same time. the General Court made diligent search among the Tunxis tribe for the incendiaries, but this neither restored life nor records. This fire occurred 1666.

    He inherited part of his father's homestead opposite the meeting-house; Freeman, 1664; ensign of the Farmington Train Band, May, 1678; Lieutenant, 1692; first chosen Deputy to the General Court for the October session of 1690 and Commissioner, May, 1692; Captain, May, 1695. At the May session, 1693, "this Court appoynts Capt Stanley and Lnt Heaet to return the thankes of this Court to the Reuerend Mr Samuel Hooker for his great paynes in preaching the election sermon, and that they desire him to grant a coppy thereof to be disaposed and improved by the Generall Court for the peoples good." (Col. Rec. of Conn., 1689-1706, p. 95) He was Deputy from Farmington to the General Court for many years and for several sessions its speaker, for which service, the Court generally voted him "thirtee" shillings. Commissioner a number of terms and Justice for Hartford County, seventeen years. Member of the Council, June 19, 1697. At the Oct. session, 1699, the General Court appointed him and two others a committee "to take care of the countries interest in the undivided lands and to indevour the preventing and detecting all illegal trading with the natives for land," etc. Appointed on a committee of five to settle the line between Rhode Island and Connecticut in October, 1702, and at the same time he was appointed a committee "to draw a Bill to prevent disorders in Retailers in strong drinks and excessive drinking and to prepare a bill to put in execution the reformation lawes." He and his wife were members of the Church in Farmington, March 1, 1679/80. He was a man of wealth, activity and usefulness. he and John Hooker, grandson of the Rev. Thomas Hooker, were the two prominent men of the town and conspicuous in the Colony. Savage erroneously says his wife's name was Elizabeth, confusing him with Sergt. Thomas hart, who died in 1728, leaving a wife Elizabeth.

    He was one of the appraisers of his uncle Stephen hart's estate in 1689. In May, 1695, he was confirmed by the General Court ensign of the Farmington train-band, and in October, 1703, was commissioned lieutenant, and subsequently promoted captain. He was for four successive years (1702-5) a deputy from Farmington to the General Court, and was appointed in may, 1705, one of the auditors of the colony. When his father's house was burned by the Indians, he was absent from home, and thus providentially saved to be the progenitor of a numerous posterity. the offices and honors thus bestowed upon him indicate that he stood high in the community. Capt. John Hart died in Farmington, Nov. 11th, 1714, aged 60 years; his wife died Sept. 19th, 1738, aged 74 years.

He was chosen Deacon, Jan. 27, 1719. After the death of his wife, he married (2) Jan. 11, 1764, ElizaBeth Galpin, widow of Isaac North of Berlin. At that time he was 84 and she was 79.     He entered Yale College in 1702, not long after its organization at Saybrook. Previous to this he had been three years in college at Cambridge. he graduated alone at Yale in 1703, and was the second who had graduated there. He was ordained pastor of the church at East Guilford, Conn., November, 1707.

    He served Yale College as its only tutor three years. His predecessor was Daniel Hooker, of Farmington, son of Rev. Samuel. Mr. Hart commenced his labors in East Guilford about 1705, and was mainly instrumental in gathering a church of thirteen members, over which he was ordained at its formation in November, 1707, and continued pastor until his death. Rev. Mr. Chauncey, of Durham, preached his funeral sermon, and gave him an exalted character. He was greatly beloved by his people, and his memory is yet cherished.

His wife, Esther, who was the mother of his children, died July 10th, 1743, aged 57 years, when he married second, Jan. 11, 1743/4, widow Hannah Hull, who also died, Nov. 27th, 1760, aged 76 years.     They lived on Hart street, next west of Wothington Village, sometimes called lower lane. The house is still standing, 1873, with the upper story projecting over lower. It is related of him that when at work in Farmington meadows, he observed a bear coming into the lot; he seized his pitchfork and mounted his horse hitched under a tree, and pursued the bear and killed it. This anecdote is related by his great grandson of Candor, NY. He was a deacon in Kensington church, and died Jan. 27th, 1770, aged 84 years. Elizabeth, his widow, died Nov. 14, 1777. He is said to be one of the early settlers of 'Great Swamp Society'. In 11753, April 27th he headed a petition to the General Assembly for a division of this society, and the result was a new society called New Britain in 1754, now 1874, the town and city of New Britain.
