Lorenzo Dow Grubaugh was born on 14 Sep 1884 in Morris County, KS to Joshua Lee Grubaugh and Nora Mary Henry. He was the 5th of 12 children born to this couple. His mother died in 1896 shortly after giving birth to the twelfth child (who was stillborn) and the family eventually went their separate ways. Lorenzo lists his birth date as 14 Nov 1885 in the World War I draft registration, but he appears as a 6 month old child in the 1885 Kansas census, setting his birth year as 1884.
Lorenzo married Lula Belle Rowton in 1909, likely in Kansas. They never had any children. They divorced on 3 Jun 1929 in El Paso County, CO. Lula Belle went west to Santa Barbara County, CA where she eventually married Clarence Leroy Rogers. Lorenzo never remarried. Lorenzo spent most of his life as a farmer. He died as a result of injuries sustained in a barroom fight on Easter night. A newspaper account of the inquiry is as follows:

Inquest Held Into Ketchum Man's Death
Hailey, April 27 - Death by "accidental means causing circulatory failure, due to causes unknown . . " was the verdict of a coroner's jury Wednesday at an inquest called in the death of Lorenzo D. Grubaugh, 65, of Ketchum. Grubaugh died at 5 am Tuesday at the Sun Valley Hospital, assertedly of injuries received in an altercation Easter Sunday in the Legion club at Ketchum. He had been hospitalized at Sun Valley since Thursday. The inquest was conducted by Dr. Robert H. Wright, coroner, assisted by J. J. McFadden, prosecuting attorney. O. S. Farniun's testimony that Grubaugh had admitted both having an altercation and the blame for it, was corroborated by E. W. Smith. Details of an autopsy performed Tuesday night were given by Dr. John Moritz, who testified that Grubaugh had no sustained periods of rationality while hospitalized. Testifying were the bartender, Lue D. Hill, Ed S. Haynes, who had been asked to take Grubaugh home, Ray Daily, whom Haynes had asked for help, and Mr. & Mrs. Robert Jacobs, who saw the altercation. Testifying about getting Grubaugh to the hospital Thursday were James Reddy and Owen Simpson. According to the testimony, Grubaugh had been dozing on the bar. The bartender asked Haynes to take Grubaugh home but warned he was belligerent when drinking. Haynes woke Grubaugh up; then asked Daily, who was outside, for help. Grubaugh got as far as the door before resisting, then slapped the glasses off Daily's face and tore his wrist watch off. The witnesses agreed they had heard Grubaugh's head hit the floor but all testified that head seen no blow struck by Daily. Members of the jury were James Neyman, foreman, A. T. Glenn, Charles Harris, C. E. McGraw, L. P. Snyder, and Alden Neilsen. The inquest started at 9:15 am. The jury retired at 11:29 am and returned its verdict at 11:54 am. The late Mr. Grubaugh was born in 1884 in Wichita, Kansas and was a resident of the Ketchum area since 1936. He was engaged in farming on Warm Springs creek. Survivors include a brother, Charles G. Grubaugh, Park City, Mont., a nephew, Glen Grubaugh, Ketchum, a brother in Texas and a sister in California. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday at the Episcopal church in Ketchum. Interment will be made in the Ketchum cemetery, under the direction of the McGoldrick funeral home.

Benjamin Franklin Grubaugh was born in 1886 in Morris County, KS to Joshua Lee Grubaugh and Nora Mary Henry. He was the 6th child of 12 born to this couple. His mother died shortly after giving birth to the 12th child (in 1896). Benjamin when just 10 years old when she died. The family split up shortly after 1900. Benjamin moved to the west coast where he met and married Grace M. Stedman. They were married 2 Jul 1914 in Los Angeles County, It was somewhat of a rocky marriage. The following anecdote comes from Los Angeles Times:

Wife Blacks Eye of Motorman Who is Nearly Twice Her Size
"If you are good on New Year's Eve, I will be good to you", was the promise Mrs. Grace Grubaugh of Venice made her husband, she told Judge Crall in the trial of the divorce suit of Benjamin Grubaugh yesterday. "Then," she added, "he went out that night and stayed late, having a good time at the beach."
Mr. Grubaugh is a motorman and weighs 206 pounds. His wife tips the scale at 110 pounds. He told Judge Crall that his wife had torn his coat and blacked his eye. He charged Mrs. Grubaugh with having a bad temper, being intemperate and cruel.
In a cross-complaint, Mrs. Grubaugh declared that when she went to her old home in Salt Lake City to recover her health, the understanding was that her husband would join her there later. He did not arrive, so she borrowed money, returned to Venice and was told that she was not wanted. The court granted her the decree and $20 a month alimony.
Benjamin and Grace divorced 22 Jan 1919 in Los Angeles County. Sometime before 1930, Benjamin married Myrtle Harris. She had been previously married to Aden Ellsworth Kerns and her son from that marriage, Leroy B. Kerns, lived with Benjamin for quite a while. In fact, Myrtle and Leroy are listed with Benjamin in the 1920 census, while Myrtle is still married to Aden. Myrtle and Aden divorced shortly after that census and she married Benjamin. Benjamin had no children from either wife. Benjamin died in Los Angeles, CA in 1950.

Jonathan Lee Grubaugh, 72, passed away Thursday evening at the Morris County hospital. He was born near Council Grove on February 5th, 1894, and married Luretta Lehman, April 20th, 1919, in Scott City. They lived in Kansas City from 1923 until March 1943, when he retired to a farm near here. Grubaugh was a member of the Church of Christ Christian. He was preceded in death by two sons, Joshua and Harold Robert. Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, LeRoy Delbert Grubaugh of Kansas City, KS; and Charles Glen Grubaugh of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Marida) Barber, of Council Grove, KS, and Mrs. John (Faynola) Bettles, of Council Grove, KS; one brother, John Grubaugh, of Branson; and 8 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, at the Church of Christ Christian, with the Rev. Dale Rider officiating. Burial will be in the Morris County Cemetery near Dwight, KS.

OBITUARY

Leora Esther Eldredge was born in Morris County, Kansas, September 11, 1897. In 1909 she came with her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Eldredge to Idaho where they lived on a farm near Fruitland. She graduated from the Fruitland High School with the class of 1917. January 6, 1918 she married Amos A. Garnder, of Payette. To this union were born five children, Byron, Eugene, Jack, Helen and Baby Kenneth. In giving life to Kenneth the supreme sacrifice of motherhood was made. She died December 22, 1927 at 9:40 p.m. being at the age of 30 years, 3 months and 11 days. How applicable is the scripture of 1 Timothy 2:15, "Not-withstanding she shall be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, charity and holiness with sobriety."

Besides her husband and little ones she leaves her parents, 7 sisters and six brothers. Brothers and sisters of the deceased are as follows: Mrs. Mary Burnett, of Wilder, Idaho; George Eldredge, of Delta, Ohio; Mrs. C. H. Sargent, Mrs. E. B. Sargent, Mrs. Oliver Bingaman, Mrs. Harry Curtis and Frank Eldredge, of Fruitland; Leon Eldredge, of Delta, Utah; Mrs. Lyle Brown, of Boise, Idaho; Tom Eldredge, of Corvallis, Oregon; Fred and Glen Eldredge, of South Bend, Indiana; and Mrs. John Metzler, of Burbon, Indiana.

For the past six years the Gardner family have been living in Oregon, with the exception of one year spent in California. Since August they have been living in Fruitland.

Lola as she was known by her friends was of quiet disposition, a good mother and a true friend. At the age of 13 years she publicly confessed her Christ and united with the church of the Brethren. Her Faith in the Infinite was manifested when on the evening before her death she asked to be anointed with oil and be prayed for according to the scripture of James 5. Her last words expressed confidence and peace as glimpses of a fairer land seemed to be visualized before her.

Funeral services were held from the Brethren church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. G. Shank and the body laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in Payette. The many beautiful flowers, and the large crowd of sorrowing friends who attended the services, were as tokens of the high esteem in which this beloved woman was held. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved ones, especially to the husband and the 5 poor babies, who will never know or have a mother's love.(The Payette Independent, Thursday, December 29, 1927)

COUNCIL GROVE ?Vernon H. Day, 95, longtime resident of Council Grove, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at Morris County Hospital. He was born March 8, 1919, in Alta Vista to William and Cora (Grubaugh) Day.He married Alberta Richardson on June 18, 1942. He joined the United States Army on Oct. 10, 1942, and he was honorably discharged March 11, 1946.Vernon enjoyed his home and yard and tinkering on things. His Chihuahua Chico was his loyal companion. Clinton Leon Grubaugh was born to Eugene Franklin Grubaugh and Josie Evelyn Main on 26 Jul 1928 in Great Bend, Barton, Kansas. He died just 10 months later. He was the only child of Eugene and Josie. His tombstone is clearly written "Cliton" Leon Grubaugh, but he was undoubtedly named for his maternal grandfather, Clinton Lee Main, and the typo in the tombstone was never repaired.

GRUBAUGH BABY DIED
Clinton Leon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Grubaugh, was born July 26, 1928, and departed this life May 12, 1929, at the age of 9 months and 16 days.
Some weeks ago he contracted a cold, which developed into pneumonia, and this proved fatal Sunday night.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Main, and a great grandmother, Mrs. Emma Herrell
Although his little life on earth was short, he brought sunshine and gladness, which is now changed to sorrow.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Tom Coats. Interment was in the Peace Creek cemetery.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, August 13, at the Porter Funeral Home; burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, KS. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Delbert retired from Phillips Petroleum Company in 1981 after 32 years as a maintenance supervisor. He was a WWII veteran with the 149th Combat Engineers, landed with the forces on Normandy Beach on D-day, served with Army Reserves for 32 years, and was a member of the VFW. He was also a member of the Antioch Family Worship Center. He is survived by his wife, Deana Grubaugh, of the home; son, Jon Grubaugh, and three daughters, Patti Wolters, Nancy Gilpin, and Terri Panjada, all of Kansas City,KS; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marida Barber and Faynola Bettles, both of Council Groves, KS. Council Grove - Harold Grubaugh, a former resident of Council Grove, was found shot to death early Sunday at a rooming house where he lived in Kansas City. Police say that he had killed himself with a shotgun.
The time and place of the funeral service will be announced by the Kendall Funeral Home.
Harold Grubaugh was born in Sep 1929, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Grubaugh who live 10 miles east of Council Grove. He graduated from Council Grove High School in 1948. Survivors include his parents, two brothers, Charles, Wilsey and Leroy, Wyandotte County; and two sisters, Miss Flora Grubaugh and Mrs. Donald Barber, Council Grove.
The following note refers to Harold's emotional status at the time of his death:
Harold was found dead at a men's rooming house in Kansas City early on a Saturday. Officers said he had placed a shotgun in his mouth and fired it. Friends gave information that he had recenty undergone and emotional disturbance and had been despondent

Opal Eldridge Dickson, 103, passed away on December 8, 2009, in Omaha, Nebraska. Opal was born on October 2, 1906, to Margaret and Frank Eldridge in Payette, Idaho. Opal graduated from Fruitland High School in 1924 and attended Lewiston Normal School where she obtained her Life Certificate to teach school. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 from ISU. Her first teaching job in the Pahsimeroi Valley was where she met her cowboy and forever love, Albert "Dick" Dickson. They were married on July 3, 1928, and had almost 71 wonderful years together before Dick passed away in 1999. Besides Pahsimeroi, she taught school in Fruitland, Gooding, Challis, and Wendell. An active member of the Gooding United Methodist Church; she also was a member of the Cosmopolitan Chapter #36 Order of Eastern Star; Garnet Court #5 Order of Amaranth; and Alpha Delta Kappa. Painting was her hobby, and many beautiful oil paintings by Opal hang in the homes of her family and friends. Opal's life was spent educating ? teaching school, giving piano lessons, and being an amazing friend and mentor to people of all ages. Her home was a refuge not only for her family but to those life travelers who could benefit from her wise and positive attitude. She wholeheartedly engaged in whatever she was doing and contributed fully to those who knew her. We celebrate the blessing of her life.

She is survived by: her children, Elaine Miller and Alaire (Melvin) Blanchard, all of Boise; and Suzanne (Ron) Andersen of Omaha, Nebraska. Her grandchildren are Judi Beauregard of Boise; Julie (Mike) Venemon of Twin Falls; David Criswell and Keith Criswell of Santa Cruz, California; Nanci (Rick) Bennett of Caldwell; Aaron (Linda) Chigbrow of Taos, New Mexico; Connie (Joel) Moore of Vancouver, Washington; Maggie (Heath) Mann of Pocatello; Jane (Rob) King of Omaha, Nebraska; Shari (Rob) Reynolds, Chrissy Andersen and Kim (Todd) Jamber, all of Omaha, Nebraska. She is survived by twenty seven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Velma Amick of Portland, Oregon; and her brother, Franklin (Cheryl) Eldridge of Lincoln, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her infant daughter, Magaret Ann; her parents, Frank and Margaret Eldridge; sister, Connie Eldridge; granddaughter, Leona Erickson; and great granddaughter, Cady Reynolds.
