Her father was Abraham De Witt, who was an early settler and died in 1831..... Mr. Slosson is one of the pioneers of Broome county. He was in his younger days in active business, and learned the trade of cloth dresser and carried on the business for eighteen years in the then village of Binghamton, at what was then known as Lewis Mills. Mr. S. retired upon his farm in 1850, where he hwas ever since resided. Mr. S. is a man of strong mind and sound judgment, and is universally respected for his firm adherence of principles he believes to be right. He is now in the possession of allhis faculties and appears to wear the years with as good grace as most men do at sixty or seventy years. Although nearly eight-five years have come and gone, he has lived to see this county grow from a howling wilderness to one of great prosperity, and the now city of Binghamton, containing a population of 20,000 people, has come to such from a small hamlet of which he can well remember. Truly he is one of the early pioneers of old Broome county, and has kept alove the memories of this county during all its changes.

History of Kansas by William G. Cutler
WM. B. SLOSSON, one of the pioneers of Albany, was born November 2, 1835, in Broome County, N. Y>. Settled at Albany, Nemaha County, Kan., in April 1857, and lived there and at Salem, Neb., until his final location at Sabetha in 1870 or '71. He married in March, 1860, in his and her native county, Miss Achsah L. Lilly. They have one child - Edwin E., born June 7, 1865, in Albany. Mr. and Mrs. Slosson have both been almost life-long Congregationalists. Mrs. Slosson, an active temperance and Sunday-school worker, occupied for years in Sabetha the position of president of the W. C. T. U., and superintendent of the Congregational Sunday-school of that place. Mr. Slosson opened the first store in December, 1861, in Albany, with a stock of goods brought from Salem, Neb., because of the fear of the "Free-state'' owners that they would be seized by the border ruffians if left in Salem. He was among the most prominent organizers of "Council No. 40, of the Union League of Albany," organized July 22, 1863, and prior to that had, with others of Albany and vicinity assisted many a runaway black to his freedom - once barely escaping an armed, drunken and maddened mob at Nebraska City, by persuading the Pro-slavery ferryman and securing passage across the Missouri for his party, including three escaping slaves. In 1872 he was appointed by Governor Osborn to a State office, Trustee of the Blind Asylum, and served the state in that capacity and as Trustee and Secretary of the Board for all the State Charitable Institutions for four years or until 1876. In 1882 he removed with his family to Leavenworth city, Kansas, where he now resides, and is connected with the Brown Medicine & Mfg. Co. of that city as its Vice-President and Advertising Manager. As an early settler, staunch Christian, temperance worker, active businessman, and fearless advocate of the right at all times and places, must W. B: Slosson ever be remembered.

History of Kansas by William G. Cutler

SAMUEL SLOSSON, of Slosson Bros., was born in 1837, in Broome County, N. Y.; reared on a farm and came thence, in 1863, to Albany, Kan., associating with his brother, W. B. Slosson, who had located there as early as 1858. The brothers were prominent and prosperous merchants here until 1870, when they "packed up bag and baggage" and came to Sabetha, building the east part of the "Red Front" block. Samuel Slosson was the first station agent at this point, serving about a year. About this time the brothers built the warehouse now known as the Price elevator, and continued in the mercantile and grain business. In 1881 the "Red Front" block was nearly trebled in size, its present dimensions being 64x70 feet. Mr. Slosson married in Salem, Neb., in 1875, Miss Emma S., daughter of Dr. J. R Brooke, a native of Philadelphia, who brought his family to Salem in 1860. Mrs. Slosson was born in Ohio, and educated in the Nebraska State Normal School, from which she graduated in 1871. Chief Forester in Santa Barbara Interview says He has made no statement regarding the Controversy and Will ot Do So--Investigates Local matters.

    (Associated press Night Report)

SANTA BARBARA, Sept. 2, - Gifford Pinchot, chief United States Forester, accompanied by District Forester Olmstead of San francisco, arrived this evening from the north to investigate the case of WILLIS M. SLOSSON, supervisor of the local reserve, who was asked by Olmstead to resign, but refused.

He was met at the station by SLOSSON, Assistant Supervisor Merrill and representative of the Chamber of Commerce. Pinchot, Olmstead and SLOSSON went immediately to the Potter Hotel, and thence to Slosson's office, where the former began to investigate the local situation.

Asked for a statement Pinchot said: "I simply came here to investigate the matter. When the proper time comes I will give my decision."

Asked if any specific charges were made against SLOSSON, Pinchot said: "No, only unfavorable repots have been made by inspectors." he said he will give a decision on SLOSSON'S fate as soon as possible, but not before he leaves town. Further than this he said it is impossible for him to make a statement now.

Approached in regard to the Ballinger controversy, Pinchot said emphatically that he had not mentioned Balliner's name in the north and had made no statement on the matter, and would not do so. he added: "President Taft, both in public addresses and private conversation to me, has expressed himself in thorough accord with the Roosevelt conversation policies."

Pinchot reserved tonight for investigation. Tomorrow morning he will deliver a public address at the Chamber of Commerce rooms, and leave for Los Angeles at 10:30 o'clock a.m.

The Chamber of Commerce has passed unanimously a resolution protesting against the removal of SLOSSON as local supervisor.

Stewart Edward White, author of works on western outdoor life, and a friend of Pinchot, will take breakfast with him in the morning It is believed he will do all he can to have SLOSSON retained.

Pinchot announces that he will return here on the 2nd inst, and personally inspect the Santa Barbara forest reserves.

He majored in chemistry and was a member of both Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa.[3] After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in 1890, he remained at the University of Kansas as a graduate student, studying chemistry, physics, geology and psychology. He was awarded a Master of Science degree in 1892.[4] Slosson was offered a fellowship in psychology at Clark University, but chose instead to accept a position as Assistant Professor of chemistry at the University of Wyoming because it paid well enough to allow him to marry.[5] He married May Gorslin Preston at Centralia, Kansas on August 12, 1891.[4]

    University of Wyoming

From 1891 to 1903 Edwin Slosson lived in Laramie, Wyoming, where he taught chemistry at the University of Wyoming and carried out chemical research at the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station, which was associated with the University. He also acted as state chemist. His main areas of research were alkali in Wyoming soils and petroleum. His observations on these and other subjects, including food adulteration and the fuel value of prepared cereals, were published in numerous bulletins of the Experiment Station.[6][7] He participated as a special demonstrator in chemistry at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.[3]

Slosson taught all the chemistry courses at the University of Wyoming and taught popular extension courses in chemistry to community members. He also taught a course in experimental psychology and lectured on photography to the local Camera Club. During the summer vacations he studied organic chemistry at the University of Chicago, working under Julius Stieglitz and John Nef. He completed his doctoral dissertation and was awarded his Ph.D. degree magna cum laude in 1902.[3][8]

    The Independent

While living in Laramie, Slosson had contributed articles to The Independent, a weekly magazine published in New York City. After his doctoral studies, he spent the summer of 1903 in New York, working as an unpaid assistant to Hamilton Holt, the magazine's editor and publisher. He returned to Laramie in the fall, but when Holt offered him the position of literary editor on The Independent he accepted the offer and moved with his family to New York in 1904.[3]

He was connected with The Independent until 1920 as literary or managing editor and contributor.[9] He wrote many articles for the magazine and his journalism formed the basis for several books. On behalf of the magazine, he travelled around the United States visiting universities and visited Europe to interview leading philosophers and writers, including Henri Bergson, H.G. Wells, and Ernst Haeckel. The resulting articles were collected and published as Great American Universities (1910), Major Prophets of Today (1914) and Six Major Prophets (1916).[1][5]

His many articles for The Independent about scientific topics won him a reputation as a leading popularizer of science. His book Creative Chemistry, published in 1919, was a collection of articles about industrial applications of chemistry. It was his most successful publication and became a bestseller, with 200,000 copies sold by 1929.[5] It was still being used in high school and college chemistry courses in the early 1940s.[3] In 1920 he published another collection, Easy Lessons in Einstein, explaining the theory of relativity to a non-scientific audience. From 1912 to 1920 he taught a course on physical science for journalists at the Pulitzer School of Journalism.[5]

    Science Service

In 1920, the biologist William Emerson Ritter invited Slosson to become the first head of Science Service, which was being organized by Ritter and the newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps with the aim of improving the general public's understanding of science by providing scientific news to daily newspapers.[10] Slosson accepted Ritter's job offer, and in January 1921 he moved to Washington, D.C., where Science Service's offices were located in the National Research Council building.[11]
Slosson, whose official title at Science Service was Editor, was responsible for organizing and staffing the agency. His initial efforts were concentrated on promoting and developing science journalism by the means of a weekly syndicated news service called Science News Bulletin.

Slosson described Science Service as "a sort of liaison officer between scientific circles and the outside world".[12]Science News Bulletin was well received and in September 1922 it began to be issued to newspapers and magazines daily rather than weekly.[10] Also in 1922, Science Service started publishing Science News Letter, a weekly magazine for sale to individuals.

Watson Davis, an engineer at the National Bureau of Standards and part-time science journalist who had been submitting articles to Science News Bulletin since it was established, became managing editor of Science Service in January 1923.[11] Davis's assistance and the growing success of the agency allowed Slosson to devote more of his time to writing, lecturing and travelling.[1] He contributed many articles to Science News Letter and other magazines including Collier's Weekly, and published five more books during the last decade of his life. He made his first radio broadcast at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in 1924, and in June of that year Science Service collaborated with the National Research Council to establish a weekly series called Science News of the Week. These radio broadcasts featured scientists talking about their work. Slosson also travelled extensively as a news correspondent for Science Service, in 1923 joining an expedition by astronomers to Mount Wilson Observatory in California to observe a solar eclipse.[11]

When Slosson died of heart disease on October 15, 1929 in Washington, he was "easily the outstanding interpreter of sciences to the non-technical public", according to the Dictionary of American Biography.[4]
