    Mrs. Lothrop before her marriage, had been dismissed from the church at Boston, NOv. 10, 1644 and removed her church relations to that of Barnstable. Her husband had made her acquaintance in Boston Their marriage was recorded by his father on the Barnstable Church Register as follows: "My sonn Samuel and Elizabeth Scudder marryed at my house by Mr. Freeman, Nov. 28, 1644." She was a sister of John Scudder of Barnstable, who was born in England, 1619 and came from London in 1635, locating first at Chrlestown.

    Name:
    His rank among his townsmen in 1730, when all the freemen were enrolled, was next to his brother Samuel. He was a man of worldly thrift, and had a family of enterprising sons, who are said to have planted themselves on seven hills within the old nine-miles square of Norwich. He died March 28, 1733, and she Aug. 22, 1737. His headstone in old Norwich town burial ground is the oldest one now there with an inscription on it. It gives us this tribute to his worth: "Here lies buried ye body of Mr. Israel Lothrup, ye Husband of Mrs. Rebekah Lothrop, who lived a life of exemplary piety & left ye Earth for Heaven mar. ye 28, 1733, in ye 73d year of his age."

    He settled on the eastern declivity of Blue Hill, in the southwest part of the present town of Franklin, Conn. He was considerably in official life, both military and civil, and was an active man in promoting all the interests of society. His will, bearing date March 22, 1758, named as legatees, his wife Sarah; his deceased son Israel's three daughters, Ann, Lois and Ednah; his Sarah; his daughter Mary Birchard; daughter Catharine Hackly; youngest daughter, Prudence; and his son, Jedidiah, Simeon, and Ezekiel.

    Name:
    They settled on Plain Hills, in the north part of Norwich. He was a farmer, and his record was that of an enterprising business man, and a good citizen. In religion he was an earnest and zealous disciple, searcely satisfied with what he looked upon as too rigid and formal, the modes adopted in the established Congregational Church, with which he united in 1732 - his wife having been a member from 1717. After her death, which occurred April 20, 1730, he married (2) August 5, 1731, Mary Kelly, who, the same year united with the First Church of Norwich. It was during her lifetime that the great outbreak occurred from the Separatists, and both she and her husband were among the leaders in that disturbing movement. Both of them were warned to appear before the church, August 25, 1745, and answer for their presumption in joining with others to 'set up' a separate meeting. Mr. Lothrop assigned five reasons for his separation, viz: 1. "The minister (Rev. Dr. Lord), denying the power of godliness, through not in word, yet in practice. 2. Insisting on imprudences, and not speaking up for that which is good. 3. Not praying for their meeting (the Separatist) and not giving thanks for the late glorious work (that which attended the preaching of Mr. Whitfield). 4. Not a friend to lowly preaching and preachers, particularly not letting Mr. Jewett preach once, and once forbidding Mr. Crosswell. (These were both separate and revival preachers, and therefore obnoxious to the standing order). 5. Not having the sacrament for six months in the most glorious part of the late times; and often enough since the church is in difficulty, and oftener now than ever."

    Mrs. Lothrop assigned these reasons for her withdrawal: 1. "As to communion in the church at the sacrament, I did not commune because I was in the dark, and thought I was not fit. 2. Another reason, because I was not edified. 3. Because the power of godliness, it seems to me is denied here, and is elsewhere. 4 By covenant I am not held here any longer than I am edified."

    Mrs. Lothrop died in Norwich, April 19, 1760, and he married (3) May 20, 1761, Phebe French. He died Set. 27, 1778, as his gravestone, still standing quite by itself on the south side of the old part of the Norwich Town cemetery, testifies. Importing medicines directly from Europe, they not only supplied a wide area of country about home, but also received orders from New York".

    The following tribute, from mrs. Sigourney's "POST MERIDIAN" is well worth a place in this family memorial:
    "Among childhood's unfading sketches of my native [lace, is the figure of a beautiful ole man of eight-four, Dr. Joshua Lathrop, who, until the brief illness that preceded dissolution, took daily equestrian excursions, withheld only by very inclement weather. Methinks I clearly see him now; his small, well-knit; perfectly upright form, mounted upon his noble, lustrous black horse, readily urged to an easy canter, his servant a little in the rear. I see the large, fair, white wig, with its depth of curls, the swarthy cocked hat, the rich buckles at knee and shoe, and the nicely plaited ruffles, over hand and bosom, that in those days designated the gentleman of the old school. Repeated rides in that varied and romantic region, were so full of suggestive thought to his religious mind, that he was led to construct a good little book, in dialogue form, on the works of nature and nature's God, entitled, 'The Father and the Son,' which we younglings received with great gratitude from its kind-hearted author His quick, elastic step in walking, his agility in mounting his steed, as well as his calm and happy temperament, were remarkable, ad a model for younger men."

    His will, dated May 29, 1795, names as legtees his wife, "Mercy, son Thomas, daughter Lydia Austin, friends and nieces Abigail Gardiner, Hannah Thomas, Mehetabel Carew, and Sally Eells, living with me."

    His death occurred Oct. 29, 1807, and that of his widow, July 7, 1833, at ninety-one years of age.

His will, dated at Bozrah, Oct. 11, 1790, as that of Captain Jedidiah Lathrop, names as legatees, his sons, Jedidiah, Ephraim, Uriah, Zephaniah, and Israel; and his daughters, Mary West, Abigail Fish, Phebe Gardiner, Olive Stark, and Jemima Gardiner. His death occurred June 9, 1792.

    Name:
    Elijah married Dc. 19, 1764, Anna, daughter of Joseph and Mary Carew, and went same year into Bozrah, where he lived and died, a useful and honored man. He was a member of the Connecticut legislature in 1791. Though early called into the service of his country, having served in three campaigns of the old French War, he preferred the less exposed and less noticed, yet none the less useful life of the farmer.

    His first wife died April 9, 1770, and he married the second time, March 21, 1771, Lydia, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Bingham) Baldwin, who was born, Oct. 19, 1740.

    After a distressing confinement of eleven years, with an obstinate rheumatic complaint, induced at first by his exposures in his military campaigns, he died in Bozrah, march 20, 1814.
