    Excerpt from "New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Vol. IV": Robert came to Plymouth, Massachusetts before 1654. He was a member of the church and was admitted a freeman of the colony, December 14, 1697, but he rebelled against the bigotry and intolerance of the Puritan government and was often in court in his younger days. He rsided at Sandwich for a time and was there in 1654, an apprentice of Thomas DEXTER, Jr. who treated him harshly and whom he had before the court. Afterward he bought his time of his employer. He wa quiet and respected, an officer of the town, and a man of property. His children intermarried with some of the most prominent families. In later years he lived at Lakeville, Middleborough, Plymouth county, now the town of Plympton. In 1686 he deeded land to his son Robert, Jr. He was a highway surveyor in 1675.

    Notes:

    Excerpt from "New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Thrid Series, Vo. IV" :Matthew was a tanner by trade, and settled in Saybrook, Connecticut, where he received 4 acres of land, in consideration of settling there to carry on his occupation. This was in what was known as the "Oyster River Quarter," now Westbrook, Connecticut. The Saybrook records contain no further mention of him except to record one child, and it is presumed that he died in early life.

    It has been brought to my attention though an e-mail from Kirk Ransom, dtd 2-28-2012, that Matthew Ransom is not the son of Robert Ransom of Plymouth MA. This has been determined by DNA testing. So for this reason, I have removed Matthew as being the son of Robert.

    Notes:

    The record of Joshua's life and career is obscure and involved in much uncertainty. It is obvious from a close review of the Plymouth records that he was a man active in affairs, having numerous land deals, indicating that he was a general trade and property man. After his second marriage his relations to his children seem to have been mainly restricted to John, the son, by his wife, Susanna, and gave him the home at Plympton previous to his death. It seems quite likely that Robert and Mary, the children by Mary Gifford, remained in Rhode Island after their mother's death in their uncle's (Yelverton0Gifford) family, where they were reared.[gifford.ged]

    Excerpt from "New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Vol. IV": Joseph was a husbandman, residing in Lyme, Connecticut. He was a captain of Connecticut troops in the expedition against Quebec under General Wolfe, and fell on the Plains of Abraham. Two of his sons also served in the colonial army in his company. He sold the lands granted to his father in Saybrook, April 15, 1715.

    Robert of Colchester undoubtedly led an industrious life and was largely engaged in the acquisition of wealth, though it would probably do him an injustice to say that he did not divide his time impartially between treasures of the heavenly and earthly sort, for his interest manifested in the affairs of the Colchester Society indicates that he did not overlook the spiritual concerns of the good people with whom his fortunes were cast. His daily duties and exemplary life, as commemorated by local and family records, mark him as an interesting character. He and Alice reared a large family, 7 boys and 4 girls, and all them, so far as the history of their careers has been preserved, seem to have achieved success in their varied lives, and their share of honors in public stations.

    Robert died supposed on the old farm near Colchester.

    Notes:

    It is not very clear what pursuit he followed during his early manhood, but was probably a farmer and general trader. The records show that his father gave him land which he sold to his bothers when he moved to Massachusetts, or afterwards. He went with his family to Shelburn Falls, Mass., a short time previous to the outbreak of the Revolutionary war, probably about 1770. He did not serve in the army during the war, being 53 years of age when it began. But he sent 6 sons, Ezekiel, Hazael, John, Newton, Calvin and Jabez, all of them mere youths at the time of their enlistment, but became sturdy soldiers in the Massachusetts Continental Line. The family records speak of Newton as a devoted patriot in the cause of American liberty, and as a very pious and exemplary man in all the relations of his daily life. His descendants at the close of the war scattered to make new homes for themselves in Vermont and Eastern New York, and in course of time many of them emigrated to Michigan and other Wester States, where they became actively interested in the social and political affairs of the communities in which they lived. Newton at the time of his death was with his son Luther, then a practicing physician at Halifax, VT., and is buried in the grave yard at that place.

    Notes:

    Samuel purchased land on April 28, 1757 from DANIEL LAURENCE, JR. of Canaan, in the County of Litchfield and Colony of Connecticut. He paid 50 pounds.

    In the summer of 1773, he sold all of his lands in Litchfield County and emigrated to Wyoming Valley.

    On August 24, 1776, it was voted at a town meeting, to erect certain forts "as a defence against our common enemy," the British and Indians. Among the forts erected in compliance with this resolution, was one on Garrison Hill, in Plymouth; and for this Samuel hauled the first log.

    Samuel was commissioned by Congress, a Captain of the company August 26, 1776, Wyoming at that time being in Westmoreland Co., then within the jurisdiction of Connecticut. He served in New Jersey and Pennsylvania during the years 1777 and 1778, and was killed at the Wyoming massacre July 3, 1778.

    Excerpt from "the Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys": Samuel Ransom during the French and English war was a soldier in one of the Connecticut battalions. His name first appears on the pages of Wyoming history, October 2, 1773, when he purchased of John Ransom "lower tier lot No. 10" in Plymouth township, Wyoming Valley. About this time he was admitted an inhabitant of Plymouth, and removed there from Canaan with his family. On March 2, 1774, he was selectman of Westmorland (Wyoming) and surveyor of highways, and in 1775 was constable of the town. He hauled the first log for the erection of Fort Shawnee, August, 1776, and at this time was captain of the Third Company, Twenty-fourth Regular Connecticut militia, having been commissioned in October, 1775; but having been commissioned captain in the continental service August 26, 1776, he gave up command of the militia, and with Captain Durkee began to raise the two Wyoming independent companies. Captain Ransom and his men were with Washington in the campaign of 1777, at Bound Brook, Mud Creek, Brandywine, Germantown, and other points, and went into winter quarters at Valley Forge. In May, 1778, he hastened back to Wyoming and took part in all the events preceding and during the battle. Early in the fight he was wounded in the thigh, was left on the field and fell into the enemy's hands and when the bodies of slain Americans were afterward gathered for burial, Captain Ransom's body was found near the ruins of Fort Wintermoot, covered with gashes and with the head cut off. After the battle the widow, Esther Ransom, fled with her six children to the Delaware, and finally made their way back to Connecticut. Early in 1780 she returned with the children to Plymouth.
