    Aaron Hait was listed on a revolutionary War militia pay roll dated 20 March 1777 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He had served nineteen days in the 9th Connecticut Militia, Captain Charles Smith's Company, Col. John Mead's Regiment, under the command of General Wooster, and was discharged 28 November 1776. Aaron's father and brother, David and Frederick Hait, and his brother-in-law Gideon Palmer, married to Aaron's sister Mary, also served in the 9th regiment. Gideon, like Aaron, enlisted in Greenwich on the same day, and served in the same company. Other men associated with the David Hait family also served in this unit: Benjamin Brush was ensign, John Todd was drummer, and Jacob White was a fellow private. Captain Charles Smith was "of Stanwich", in Greenwich just over the town line from the Long Ridge area where the Haits resided.

    An unpublished and undocumented family history written by Henry Hait's granddaughter-in-law says of Aaron only that he "was a sailor in the English navy." No contemporary evidence regarding this alleged British service has been located, though his patriotic service seems to contradict this tradition.

    Aaron married Lorina/Lorinah BRUSH in 1777. Lorina/Lorinah (daughter of Benjamin BRUSH and ? STRONG) was born in abt. 1755/56; died on 21 Feb 1810; was buried in Pound Ridge Cemetery, Pound Ridge, Westchester Co., New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    "Fredrick" Hait enlisted in the Connecticut Militia 6 May 1777 in Greenwich, serving twenty-three days from 13 August to 4 September 1776 in Captain David Hait's Company, Col. John Mead's Regiment, "on the expedition to New York, August 1776, commanded by Lieut. Charles Smith."

    Letters of administration for Frederick's estate were granted to William White on 4 October 1814. Joel Waring and Henry Hait 3rd appraised Frederick's estate on 10 October 1814, and an additional inventory was taken on 21 November 1814. His widow, Phoebe Hoyt, was appointed the guardian of their minor son, David Newton Hoyt, on 6 April 1815. William White filed his account on 11 April 1815, and the estate was distributed on 4 May 1815, identifying as heirs the widow; the heirs of Hannah reynolds, "a decd daughter"; daughter Sarah Ayres, wife of Isaac Ayres; and son, David Newton Hait. The distributed land parcels bordered lands of Scudder Warring, Henry Hait, the heirs of David Hait, the heirs of Jeremiah Knapp, and others.

    In 1810 David H. Cogswell was in the Town of Charlton, Saratoga Co., New York, in a household that appears to contain at least two and possibly three families (three adult males and three adult females, all of similar ages). He was still there in 1820, but by 1830 was in the town of Groton, where he was also listed in 1840. The widowed Lydia Cogswell was with her apparent son David Cogswell (age 40, born in Schenectady County) in Groton in 1850.

    Polly Coggeshall was born on 15 September 1777 according to the Barbour Collection of Stamford Records for marriages, birth and deaths. Her parents were listed as Dunlap and Hannah Cogshall of Stamford. She married Hezekiah Bishop on January 31, 1796 in Stamford and the officiate was Reuben Scofield.

    Polly and Hezekiah had a daughter, Eliza H. Bishop who has sometimes been referred to as Elizabeth. On all essential documents, Census, Tombstone, father's estate probate, and family bible in the possession of Candee Scofield Hoff, she is "Eliza H." Bishop Scofield.

    The fact that Polly Bishop survived her husband by 22 years attests to her strength, longevity and family support. She was surrounded by her family, her son Erastus C and daughter Eliza H. Scofield who stayed in Stamford. Her third child, Hezekiah S. Bishop predeceased both his parents.

    Polly Bishop was in the 1840 census living with another woman, both age 60+., and living next to her son Erastus C. Bishop. The companion of Polly is probably Maria Hobby, second wife of Benjamin Hobby who died in 1813*. What familial relationship existed, has not been discovered, because Maria's maiden name is unknown as yet. However, the bond was there because they are found in the 1850 US Federal census for Stamford with Polly's son, Erastus C. Bishop. The census was taken on the 11 October 1850 and she stated that she was 73. Polly is in the 1860 census again with the Erastus C. Bishop family. She stated that she was 84 years on 5th of Sept 1860 when the census was taken in Stamford.."

    Archibald was a Methodist Episcopal preacher and worked as a cooper. He moved from Connecticut in 1811 to a farm in the Town of Glenville, Schenectady County, New York. Archibald was listed on the 1820 census of that town with four males under age 10. He moved, with his wife, two daughters, and one son, to Groveland Township, Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1840, where he joined sons Bela and Henry, who had moved there in 1836 and 1839, respectively. Archibald and Abigail were listed on the 1850 census of Groveland Township with two apparent daughters, Betsy, age 23, and Abigal, age 13, both born in New York. Abigail was listed in the 1860 census in the household of Betsey Bird, age 33, in Groveland Township, and in 1870 she was in the household of Bela Cogshall, a 54 year old lawyer, in Holly Township, Oakland County, Michigan. That Esther Cornell was a daughter of this couple is proved by Esther's death record, which lists her parents as Archibald Cogshall and Abigal Slosson.

He was converted to Christianity early in life and was made a licensed preacher in the M.E. Church; was afterward ordained Deacon and subsequently an Elder; has been in the ministry 40 years; has been located as follows: four years in Oakland county, five years in Lapeer county, returned to Oakland county and remained until 1866, one year in Barry county, two years in Sparta, one year at Baron, two in Midland county, two years at Cannonsburg, one year at Sand Lake, and settled in Sparta where he has since resided. He owns 40 acres of choice land on sec. 14. He was married Jan. 10, 1833, to Minerva Haight, born March 2, 1817 in Ontario Co., NY. They have five children living--Margaret, Abigail, Seymour C., William H. and David B. Mr. Cogshall has been a member of the Masonic order for 30 years. His parents removed to Charlton, Saratoga Co., NY, when he was but a year old, where he grew to manhood. His father's farm lay on the line between Saratoga and Schenectady counties.     Bela COGSHALL, Sr., commenced the practice of his profession in Holly, and while residing their was elected too the State Legislature. Prior too that he had served as Sergeant-at-Arms. In educational affairs he was considerably interested, serving as Director of the schools at Holly, and being President of the School Board for some time. He also filled the position of Justice of the Peace. In the Masonic order he became very prominent, and the transactions of the Grand Chapter of 1882, for Michigan, give a full account of his Masonic history. He was made Knight

    Templar at Pontiac March 21, 1854, and held the highest offices in all the lodges of which he was a member. From 1854 until 1856 he was Grand Instructor of the Blue Lodge of Michigan and visited all the lodges, with one exception, in this State, correcting them in their work. He died October 21, 1881. His wife had passed from earth in 1860
