1. | Gov. John WEBSTER was born in England; died on 5 Apr 1661 in Hadley, Massachusetts. Notes:

He came to Hartford in 1636, but from what part of Massachusetts is not known. He was an original proprietor at Hartford and his home lot in 1639 was on the east side of the present Governor Street. He was appointed one of the committee which, for the first time, sat with the Court of Magistrates May 1st, 1637, and served also the following year; was one of the committee which framed the code of criminal laws for the Colony, 1642; Magistrate, 1639 to 1655; Commissioner for the United Colonies 1654; Deputy Governor, 1655; and Governor in 1656. In the great contest about church government, he took sides with the Rev. Mr. Russell of Wethersfield, which caused his removal up the river in 1659 to found the town of Hadley, where he died two years later. He was admitted Freeman by the General Court of Mass., and 31 May, 1660, "Mr. John Webster, Senior, of the new towne at Norwottock is by this Court commissionated with Magistrattical power for the yeare ensuing, to ast in all civill & criminall cases, as any one magistrate ma doe and that he youne with the commissioners in keeping the Courts at Springfield." (Rec. of Mass. Bay 4, p. 420.) He was an influential member of the church in Hartford and a leader of the Hadley Company. By family tradition, he was from Warwickshire, England. He was the fifth Governor of Connecticut.

Name:
He was the son of John and Agnes Webster the fifth governor of the colony of Connecticut, and died at Hartford in 1677. After the organization of the town if Middletown, in 1651, or 1652, he was chosen recorder, Feb. 25, 1654. In 1672, he received a grant of three hundred acres of land for services in the war, having been made a lieutenant by the General Court in April, 1654. He was a deputy nine times, from 1653-1662. About 1660, he returned to Hartford. Was chosen townsman in 1664; list and rate maker in 1668. Mrs. Webster's will is preserved in the probate office, Hartford. It is sealed with a fine seal, in excellent preservation, displaying a crest composed of a pair of clasped hands and on them a bowman with bow and arrow. The seal is oval in shape and around the device is this motto: "I am sure in good daylight."
Robert married Susannah TREAT about 1652. Susannah (daughter of Hon. Richard TREAT and Alice GAYLARD) was born in 1629 in Pitminster, Somerset, England; was christened on 8 Oct 1629 in Pitminster, Somerset, England; died in 1705 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Anne was the daughter of Gov. John Webster (of Connecticut) and his wife, Agnes Smith Webster.
The family first settled in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. John then moved his family to Hartford, Connecticut in 1636, as one of the original landowners in Hartford.
Anne married John Marsh about 1642 in Hartford, Connecticut. They had eight children: John, Joseph (died in infancy), Joseph, Samuel, Jonathan, Daniel, Hannah and Grace.
The family attended the First Congregational Church of Hartford. After a religious dispute, in 1659 John took a group of dissenters to Northampton, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. It appears that Anne was with them.
After Anne's death, her husband married Hepzibah Ford Lyman in 1664.
