    Lifelong Greenport resident Archie A. Harroun died April 27 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 87.

    He was born at a home on Second Street in Greenport on Dec. 14, 1918, to Ned and Jessie (Allen) Harroun.

    Mr. Harroun graduated from Greenport High School in 1937 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Greenport to work as a machinist for 20 years at Brigham Shipyard. In 1963, he went to work for the Greenport School District as a custodian, working for 19 years, 16 years as chief custodian, before retiring in 1982. He belonged to the Junior Order of United American Mechanics for almost 68 years; his was the longest continuous active membership of that organization.

    According to his family, Mr. Harroun learned to love the water at an early age from his grandfather, a passion he carried throughout his life. In his earlier years, he would spend his leisure time fishing, boating and sailing in Greenport waters, the family said, adding that he also enjoyed music, traveling, photography and computers, using the Internet later in life. Family said Mr. Harroun could be seen around Greenport on his scooter, running errands and touring the village.

    Predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Betty (née Williams), Mr. Harroun is survived by his children, Barbara Quinn of Manvel, Texas, Ellen Buchanan of Jacksonville, Fla., and Ned, of Greenport; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, Arthur and Fannie, and his grandson Mark.

    Visitation was April 29 and 30 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services were on May 1 at the funeral home, the Rev. Robert Grindle officiating. Interment was at Sterling Cemetery.
