    In an old copy of the Boston Gazette, dated Feb. 12, 1739, is found the following notice: "Newport, Feb 9. Mrs. Mary Hazard, widow of Mr. Robert hazard, of South Kingston, and Grand Mother to the deceased George Hazard, Esq., late Deputy Governor of Rhode Island, departed this life the 28th day of January last, in the HUNDREDTH year of her age, who was decently interr'd the Wednesday following. She had 500 Children, Grand Children, and Great Grand Children, and left behing her now living two hundred and five of the aforesaid number. She was accounted a very useful Gentlewoman both to the Poor and Rich on many accounts, and particularly amongst Sick Persons for her Skill & Judgement, which she did Gratis."

To son Smiton all land in Little Compton at wife's decease. To four sons Thomas, William, Benjamin and Robert 20 shillings equally. To three daughters Martha, Anne and Mary 15 shillings equally..."

    His will, made in 1730 and proved in Little Compton 20 June 1732: "....To wife Mary Brownell one half of my dwelling house and one half my orchard to be for her use during her life, all bills and bonds and 50 pounds a year, and all my Negroes, she to be my executrix. To sons Thomas, John, George and Jeremiah 10 pounds each and I confirm a deed of land to each of them. To son Charles all farming tools and one half of my stock. I also confirm a deed of land to him. to grand-daughter Mary Carr 10 pounds and two chests marked T.B...."

    In her will Mary Brownell left to her four sons "1 shilling each, to grandson Samuel Brownell 1 feather bed, bolster and coverlid. to brother George Pearce my mair and he to pay to my son John Brownell 8 pounds which 8 pounds I give to him....To granddaughter Mary Carr money bills and bonds of mine."

    His will made 29 Jan. 1718 and proved 20 Aug. 1728, recorded in Taunton book 6, page 142: "....My house and all my land on the west side of the highway where I now live to son Thomas Brownell and land I bought of Thomas Brownell and Edward Gray 42 acres in all. To son Benjamin Brownell the house and land where he now lives from the above highway eastward to Quicksand Pond; room in m house and income of one half of land of son Benjamin. To wife Mary Brownell one half of stock and she to be executrix. To daughters Patience, margaret and Ann, 10 pounds each. to daughter Mary's three children 5 pounds each. to grandson Wilbour 5 pounds..."
