    Name:
Aaron and his wife removed to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania following their marriage about 1772, and were living there at the time of the Wyoming Massacre which occurred July 3, 1778. His wife urged him to run to his old home in Dutchess County, NY, to escape the fury of the savages, but rather he chose to stay and take his chance. The family fled to the fort and the father went forth to defend his loved ones from the cruel foe. After the troops broke and ran, Aaron and his son of the same name also fled and hid themselves in the driftwood along the river. The father was discovered by the savages and taken out and cruelly murdered before the eyes of his son. After the massacre, his widow eventually found her way back to Dutchess County, NY, taking her five children with her. Aaron Stark's name appears on the Wyoming monument as a victim of that day's tragedy.

    Name:
James removed with his family from Dutchess Co., NY, into the Wyoming Valley Penna., probably in the spring of 1773. He settled at Wilkes-Barre in a home of log structure. Four years later, his wife became a widow, but remained in her home until the day of the massacre, July 3, 1778. She waved herself by hiding in a cornfield, and, upon finding that all of their buildings and contents were destroyed, she gathered what little she could, and taking her family of small children with her, she went all the way afoot back to her old home in Dutchess County. When she arrived at her sister's home, she was a picture of utter misery and destitution. She never recovered from this dreadful experience, and, on the 12th day of August, 1778, she passed away.

James married Elizabeth CARY in 1758. Elizabeth was born on 18 Aug 1739; died on 12 Aug 1778. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Later, they removed to the Wyoming Valley, Penn., locating on what was known as Searle Flats, across the river from Wyoming, Penn. On the night of the massacre, July 3, 1778, they made their way to the Wilkes-Barre Fort, and with about one hundred men, women and children, started for the Delaware River, and finally found their way back to their old home in Dutchess Co., NY. In 1788, they were back again living on the farm on Searle Flats. After ten years, they removed to New Jersey, and later to Goshen, NY, where both died.
