    Name:
David was in his father's household in Salem town in 1810 but he appears to have left very shortly after the census was taken for the town of Bedford; he married a Bedford girl, and their first child was born in March 1811. In 1820 in Bedford they had with them, besides a son under 10 (Stephen), a female of an age to be maria's sister Elizabeth, the future wife of David's brother Marlin In the 1820's they went to Marietta, Ohio - the oldest settlement in the state. It is not unlikely that David went to take advantage of the demand for builders; his son Stephen followed that trade all his life.

    Notes:

    Name:
Alfred was living in Rye town, Westchester Co., when the 1840 census was taken. He had at leas an ace of land there 1 Apr. 1848, when he mortgaged it for $500. The next year he sold half an acre in Rye at "Milton Landing" for $700 (Deeds, WCNY 84:240; 224:393). Both these transactions took place while he was residing in Eastchester town (adjoining Rye), where he appears in the 1850 census. In 1852 he bought garden land, 100 ft. by 113 ft., in New rochelle, NY, for $2,000, subject to a $1,000 mortgage (Deeds, WCNY 344:134, 115). It seems likely that he sold garden produce. In 1855 he sold the garden lot for $1,550 and moved to Newark, where he opened a grocery at 26 Orchard St. By 1859 he appears to have given up the grocery business and is listed as a sexton, residing at 24 Church St. the 1860 census gives hi occupation as foreman After his death in 1865, Mary lived at the same address for 4 years and then made her home with her son Thomas.

Alfred married Mary DUSENBERRY about 1818. Mary was born in 1803; died in Apr 1885. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 6.  Marlin MONTROSS Descendancy chart to this point (1.Abraham1) was born in 1800 in Salem, Westchester Co., New York; died after 1880.

    Notes:

    Name:
Marlin went to Marietta shortly after his marriage, where his brother David was already living. He was in Bedford town, Westchester Co., in 1850, a milkman, but went later that year to New York City, taking with him his 3 youngest children and his nephew James H. Montross, son of his brother David of Marietta. On 9 Aug. 1851 he leased for 5 years a 4-story brick building at 422 Fourth Ave., to be used as a dwelling and a milk and butter depot, the rent being $500 a year. Apparently the milk business did not prosper to his satisfaction; he assigned the lease 18 Feb. 1853 (Deeds, New York Co. 624:618) and soon after opened a grocery store at 174 E. 33rd St. in a $2,000 brick building. there we find him in the 1855 New York State census.
But the grocery business did not turn out well either. In June 1856 his brother Lockwood in Chenango, NY, lost his wife, and Marlin with his 20 year old daughter Mary went to keep house for him. Elizabeth may have gone to her sister Maria's home in Marietta. Lockwood married again in 1857, and Marlin moved to Binghamton. There on 29 July of that year he purchased a small lumber mill on the Susquehanna River , known as the Conklin mill property, mortgaging it for $1,800. He subsequently added another mortgage, which was foreclosed in 1869 (Mortgages, Broome Co. 26:118; 63:278). then he turned to carpentry. In 1860 his property consisted of $1,800 in real estate and $300 in personal property. In 1870 his estate had shrunk to $250 of personal property. After the death of Elizabeth, he lived with his son Cicero, then a carpenter residing on Court St., Binghamton.

    Notes:

    Name:
Lockwood was "bound out" at 10 years of age to a brother of his mother Patty Slawson in Bedford town, Westchester Co. After his first marriage he lived for 9 years in Rye town, Westchester Co., probably farming on rented land. On 1 Aug 1836 he purchased in South Salem town, Westchester Co., 34 acres, part of the farm of Stephen and Rebecca Merritt, for $784.54. On 29 Mar. 1837 he mortgaged this place for $500 and paid off the mortgage 2 months later. Then in November he sold it for $950 (Deeds, WCNY 75:154; 108:164) and shipped his goods by the Hudson and Delaware Rivers to Binghamton, NY. His son George Lockwood Montross had the bills of lading when we visited him in November 1951.

Lockwood began the new chapter in his life as a farmer and shoemaker at Page Brook in Chenango town, Broome Co., NY, where he appears in the 1850 census with real estate worth $1,000. The earliest record of Lockwood's land purchases in Brome Co., shows him buying the $125 on 17 Dec 1851 a 41 acre tract, which he sold 10 years later for $1,900 (Deeds, Broome Co. 37:174; 58:431).

Meanwhile, in 1856 Lockwood's first wife died. His brother Marlin, at loose ends after the failure of his grocery store in New York City, brought his daughter Mary and kept house for Lockwood for a while until, in early 1857, Lockwood went to Deposit and sold groceries in Home's store. There he met and married Jane Van Schoyk, whose parents kept a hotel in Deposit. Her parents were among the early settlers of Delaware Co., her mother Nancy Eggleston relating that as a child perhaps a out 1808, she lost her shoes while crossing he Mohawk River on their migration.

In 1861 Jane inherited her parents' hotel in Deposit, and she and Lockwood made their residence there. This hotel was used as a funeral home in 1951. Jane's mother apparently continued to operate the hotel since Lockwood was listed as a shoemaker in the New York State census of 1865, his real estate valued at $1,700; in 1870 it was valued at $2,800 and he had personal property worth $175; his mother-in-law as then living with them. In 1873 they sold the hotel property and purchased a 65 acre farm in Tompkins town near Deposit for $2,300, adding 13 acres in 1879 (Deeds, Delaware Co. 79:598; 87:415, 416).

Lockwood's will, made 15 Dec 1883 and proved 17 Mar 1884, left to his wife Jane (1) $800 which she had advanced t him for real estate purchases and (2) the use of all his property until is son George Lockwood reached 21. He left $200 to his great-granddaughter Elizabeth Rittenburg upon her reaching 21; if she died earlier, this sum was to go to his living children Ella, Stephen, and George. Jane was executrix.

Jane made her will 11 mar 1889; it was proved 13 Feb 1892. She left all her property both real and personal to her son George, subject to a bequest of $1,000 to her son Stephen, to be paid within a year after her death (Deeds, Delaware Co. 117:1).

Lockwood married Polly Elizabeth MERRITT on 2 Aug 1827 in Somers, Westchester Co., New York. Polly was born on 27 Dec 1808; died on 23 Jul 1856. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Name:
By the time he was 30, Henry had a shoe shop in the 2nd Ward of Albany, was married, and had a son under 5. the Albany directories show him as a shoemaker at 21 Washington St. in 1832-33. In 1839-42 he was listed as a porter, living at 17 Washington St. In 1850 the census enumerator put hi down as a passage agent, which may mean that he worked for a steamship line on the Hudson. He was a policeman 1857-59; a bartender in 1860; had an oyster saloon on State St. in 1862; and was janitor of the Albany gymnasium in 1863-67. From 1868 to 1887 he was a constable, except for 1882, when he was a clerk. In 1888 he appears as an insurance agent.

On 22 Oct 1846 Henry bought for $400 a lot on Fayette St. (30 ft. by 70 ft.), it west half of Lot 19 on 9th Ward. He sold it the next spring, 5 Mar 18447, for $450, subject to a $400 mortgage (Deed, Albany Co. 91:287; 93:212). Catherine signed the deed with her mark although she could write if she wanted to: we have the small pocket Bible in which she inscribed a message and signed her name in presenting it to her son George Henry when he enlisted in 1864 to fight in the Civil War.

When Henry was about 66, his grandson Henry and the latter's wife both died of tuberculosis, leaving an infant daughter Clara Bell Montross. The child's grandmother, widow of Henry's son George, petitioned to have Henry appointed guardian of his great-granddaughter Clara Bell. He was appointed 29 Aug. 1876 but a week later he asked the court to be relieved of responsibility on account of his "extreme old age" - 66 years. The court complies. (Guardianships, Albany Co. 13:54).

In 1889 Henry removed to Troy and stayed with a relative Margaret Hulse (Halse) on Spring Ave. From there he wrote 5 June 1890 a letter to the Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D.C., in which he recited facts about his only son George's death in the Civil War and added: "I am 80 and unable to work and have no means or property of any kind. I am supported entirely by the charity of the people. Will you please write me if there is a law under which I am entitled to a pension. Please write me soon." Signed Henry F. Montross, Spring Ave., Troy, NY, care of Margaret Hulse. There is no record that he received a pension.
