Joshua RIPLEY [1, 2] |
- The first town meeting of Windham was held June 11, 1692, when Joshua Ripley was appointed town clerk; he was also town treasurer. "He was a man widely known and respected, as of sterling sense and judgement; he was one of the first justices of the peace in Connecticut, and was appointed May, 1698, when that office was first instituted; was the first representative sent by Windham to the General Assembly, appearing there May, 1699." He was also one of the seven pillars or counsellors, and justice of the quorum in 1726. His wife was "a noble and useful woman, remarkable not only for intelligence and accomplishments, but for her skill in the art of healing. She was the first, and for a long time the only physician in the settlement, and it is said that the first male physician, Dr. Richard Huntington, received much of his medical knowledge from her."
