Name |
George ENCKE [2] |
- Albion's leading apiarist, whose farm was located just north of town. The 1904 Biographical Review of Calhoun County states, "George also has a good apiary and has handled bees for 35 years. In fact he has come to be the leading apiarist in eastern Calhoun county and has given to the subject much study and consideration. His honey product last year [i.e. 1903] will amount to more than 3,000 pounds, and as it is always of excellent quality he commands the highest market price." Also on his farm he grew melons and strawberries. In a bit of irony, his former farmland is now part of a church property which once included dairy cattle, thus making the church located in the "land of milk and honey." George was formerly a millright in his native New Jersey, and moved to Michigan in 1876. His parents were Edmund and Marietta (Green)Encke. He was married three times: 1) Della Bidwell m. 1876, d. 1879; 2) Anna Orr d. 1890; 3) Mable Frost. In Albion he lived in an elegant Victorian home on the southwest corner of Irwin Avenue and Adams St. which is still standing today.
