    • He was a dentist in Dowagiac with his brother Thomas till 1875, when he removed to Fort Madison, where he practiced dentistry until his death. He was a lieutenant in the 4th Michigan Cavalry during the rebellion. A detachment of this regiment was in the part that captured Jeff Davis. At the battle of Stone River he was thrown from his horse and broke his wrist, causing the abandonment of his playing the violin, on which he was an artist. He was capable of playing any wind instrument and soon after his recovery he as given the position of leader and director of the brigade band. Dr. Rix had a fine tenor voice and sang for many years in public and in the churches. His widow is a fine musician and for several years went to Burlington, Iowa, to play the organ in a church there. She is now a teacher on the piano and resides with her daughter at Fort Madison, Iowa. [1]
