- Edward VI ascended the throne a the age of nine in 1547, but because he was a minor the government was managed by two Protectors throughout his six-year reign- firstly the Duke of Somerset and later the Duke of Northumberland. In late 1552, Edward caught tuberculosis, and he died the following year. [1]
