- John received a B.A. degree from Magdalen College, Oxford on 1 Dec 1613. he was a member of the House of Burgesses in Virginia from 1628-1630, a member of the Government Council from 1631-1659 and Governor of Virginia from 1635-1637.n The Virginia House of Burgesses passed a resolution of good will in Mar 1659/6 in recognition of the....many favors and services rendered to the country of Virginia by the noble family of West, predecessors to Mr. John West, the now only survivor...It is ordered that the levies of the said Master West and His Family be remitted, and that he be exempted from payment thereof during life. He immigrated in 1618 to Jamestown on the ship "Bonny Bess". [1]
