      93. Lewis Gifford (Thomas3, James2, William1), was born 21 April 1757, and died 14 December 1843 (Dartmouth Vital Records). This is HEG's branch No. 9, page 72.

      He married first, 26 October 1777, Jedidah Tabor, daughter of Peter4 Tabor(Joseph3,Thomas2, Philip1), born about 1756. Descendants of this marriage can trace a line back to Francis Cook of the Mayflower.

      He married secondly, 26 September 1799, Susanna (Ashley) Allen, widow of William Allen (Dartmouth Vital Records).

      Lewis Gifford served in the Revolution , enlistings as a private 17 April 1776, stationed at Dartmouth on duty to guard the seacoast. He enlisted again in 1780 (see Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, 6:403). He petitioned for a pension 30 August 1832, stating that he was "born at Dartmouth and aged 75 last April." Abner B. Gifford, J.P. took his deposition. Among the character witnesses were: Joseph Gifford, Esq., Adam Gifford and William Gifford (National Archives, Revolutionary Pension File, S-15, 501).

List of men who marched from Dartmouth to camp under command of Captain Benjamin Dillingham and arrived there February 15, 1776; also, Private, Captain Benjamin Dillingham's Company; enlisted April 17, 1776; service, 7 months, 13 days; company stationed on seacoast at Dartmouth; roll dated Dartmouth; also, Captain George Claghorn's Company, Colonel Abiel Mitchell's (Bristol Co.) regiment; enlisted July 31, 1780; discharged October 31, 1780; service, 3 months, 2 days; regiment raised to reinforce Continental Army.

      "Luis" Gifford was baptized Sunday, 1 July 1787, at Long Plain, Dartmouth. He and his family were members of the church of Elder Daniel Hix (See S.M. Andrews, A Sketch of Elder Daniel Hix, with the history of the First Christian Church in Dartmouth, Mass. (New Bedford, 1880), 57.)
