- As a young man he lived in New York City and for the jewelry firm of Tiffany & Co. In 1862, he returned to Elba, bought a farm, and raised his family. Of a religious disposition his boyhood Bible is still in existence with the inscription on the flyleaf: "Earned when boy weeding garden during harvest." [1]
