Donna Mae JONES [2] |
- Oct. 14, 1924 - Oct. 14, 2014
On Oct. 14, her 90th birthday, Donna Mae Scarlett passed away peacefully at her home in Woodland. She was born in Rio Linda, Calif., in 1924 to Roy and Eva Storey Jones. Her family moved to Woodland when she was three years old and she attended local schools starting at Dingle Elementary and graduating from Woodland High School in 1942.
After working at the local draft board during World War II, she married the love of her life, William Scarlett. They lived for a time in Berkeley where Bill earned his business degree at UC Berkeley, while Donna supported him working at the Oakland Tribune. Upon his graduation, they made their first home in Woodland.
While her sons were growing up, she was a Cub Scout Leader, Gibson School PTA member, homemaker and the one responsible for shuttling kids around to athletic events in her Ford station wagon. She always had a strong sense of community as one of the original members of the Woodland Memorial Auxiliary (Pink Ladies), volunteering as an advisor to Sub Debs, a member of Omega Nu and serving the elderly in the Meals on Wheels Program until she was in her 80's.
She was a classic beauty with striking white hair and impeccable style. Throughout her whole life, Donna was all about her family, friends and living life to the fullest. She was an extraordinary manager of her home, excellent cook and world class traveler. She loved summers in Carmel, golfing with the ladies at the Yolo Fliers Club, entertaining dear friends, and holidays with family.
Donna was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Thelma Knott and Fern Garcelon Alexander; brothers, Gail Jones and Merlin Jones and her husband, Bill.
She is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Mary) of Woodland, Robert of Sacramento; and Thomas (Elaine) of Woodland; grandchildren, Katie of Oakland, Amy of San Francisco, Nora (Alberto) of Kensington, Will of Davis and Sara of Austin, TX.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Lani Kubunavanua for her loving care of Donna during the last two years of her life. A celebration of life will be held on Oct. 29, at the Yolo Fliers Club at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels, Yolo Hospice or the charity of your choice .
