- He was a man of means, having inherited large properties from his father. Edward lived off his income. His frivolity and wantonness in his youth had become a matter of serious concern to his father. Edward succeeded in getting into much mischief at Harvard College, but graduated in 1673. he was a freeman in 1684 at Newport and later a Captain of the Militia. Austin, in his "Genealogical Dictionary of rhode Island", gives him a trade. Edward was Deputy in 1707 from Newport to the General Assembly. His alma mater (Harvard) held a mortgage of L341 3s in 1693 and interest amounting to L74 8s against Edward Pelham described as of Rhode Island. [1]
