- He went to Newport when a youth and engaged in the West India Trade, forming the firm of "Clarke & Hammond" He amassed a fortune and went to East Greenwich, R.I., where he died at an advanced age. He took an active interest in starting the Greenwich Academy and subscribed for ten shares. He invested largely in real estate in the South, owning property in Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Tennessee, and was accustomed to drive from his home in Greenwich to St. Marys, Georgia, in his own coach, accompanied by his negro servant Caesar. He was president of the East Greenwich, R.I., Bank. On 28 June 1775, Capt. Ethan Clarke was chosen for one (9th Co., R.I. Army of Observation) of the six additional companies raised by Rhode Island for service during the Revolutionary War. On 28 March 1778, he was administrator on estate of Samuel Ward, deceased, and on 10 april, 1780, he and Anne, his wife, deeded to Henry Clarke land in Hopkinton, near Pardon Clarke's land.
