- He was both a wheelwright and a blacksmith, but making spinning-wheels was his principal business. he first settled in Haddam Neck, town of Haddam, Ct., but afterward rem. to "Waughan Reservation" in Chatham, Ct., now town of Portland, where he purchased a farm and house in 1755 of John Clark, and also other lands of James Patton in 1761. He was the executor named in his father's will, who gave him his blacksmith's shop and tools, with lands and all his movable estate. He m. 14 Feb. 1751, Deborah Brainerd (b. 17 Sep 1732), dau. of Abijah and Esther (Smith) Bainerd, of Haddan. He d. 1 July 1823, in the house occupied in 1861 by his grandson Chester S. Hulbut. Mrs. H. had d. 4 Dec 1819. Their children I may say, were the greater part of them somewhat remarkable for their longevity. [1]
