    Notes
    • Excerpt from "History of the Wheeler Family in America": With his father Capt. Thomas Wheeler in abt. 1662 he had a farm upon the Merrimac River at Nashus, N.H. "a little south of Salmon brood." In 1669 Lieut. Joseph Wheeler with Thomas Wheeler and eigth other men petitioned the General Court for a tract of land containing about 14,000 acres, as well as for "the Indian plantation of Nashobah, that doth border on one side of this tract of land, that is exceedingly well meadowed, and they do make but little or not use of it." This land was granted to them "to make a village, provided the place to be settled with not less than ten famyles within three years, and that a pious, an able, and orthodox minister be maintained there." This grant resulted in the incorporation of the town of Stow, May 16, 1683. Upon the subject of this grant an old writer remarked: "It has since been proven that the land given under this grant will support more than ten famyles." In 1674 the house of Lieut. Joseph Wheeler, at Nashua, N.H., is designated as the place of holding a meeting of the Proprietors of that town. It has been said that he left Nashua, N.H., in 1675 during King Phillip's war and that he did not return. In 1677 he administered at Concord, Mass., upon the etates of his brothers Thomas and Nathaniel.
