- Elsie Celesta Stevens, formerly of Sumner and Coquille, passed away in Eugene on February 18, 2018 at the age of 101.
Elsie was born August 30, 1916 in Attica, Kansas to George and Rowena (Nickell) Downing. In 1935, she married Gerald Burnett. They had one son, John. Gerald and Elsie divorced in 1945, and on February 29, 1948, she married Theodore Stevens. To this union were born two children, Michael & Patricia. They lived for many years in Sumner, near Coos Bay. In 1994, they moved to Coquille, where Elsie lived until moving to Eugene with her daughter in 2010.
Elsie was well known for her cheerful smile and attitude. She was instrumental in the founding of Sumner Community Church and leaves a legacy of faith to her children and grandchildren. Her main hobbies were sewing, gardening, and horseback riding.
Preceding her in death were her parents, George and Rowena Downing, her sister and husband, Edith and Eugene Brizendine, her husband Theodore, and her son and his wife, John and Joyce Burnett. Elsie is survived by her son Michael Stevens and his wife Emily, her daughter Patricia Stevens, nieces Phyllis Solomon and Shirley Ringo, 7 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
