  • Name Joseph MC EWEN  [2
    • Joseph McEwen was born at Sligo, Clarion County, Pennsylvania on April 27, 1833, son of Joseph and Mary McEwen.
In 1851, Mr. McEwen came to Wisconsin with a party of surveyors who were dispatched to make a survey of northern Wisconsin for the government. After completing this work, he went to Platteville, in Grant County where he stayed until 1855. He next moved to Milwaukee, then on to Chicago, until 1857, when returned to Wisconsin and settled in Manitowoc. He worked in the lumbering business until the Civil War erupted in 1861 and the call went out for volunteers. He enlisted in the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Battery of light artillery and served admirably until mustering out as a quartermaster sergeant in 1865. While serving at the battle of Murfreesboro, he was thrown from his horse and so severely injured that is caused partial paralysis and blindness that lingered for many years.
After the war he returned to Wisconsin, settling at Wausau. In 1869, Joseph McEwen was united in marriage to Miss Helen M. Slosson. Their marriage was blessed with four children. In 1874 he was elected Marathon County Surveyor and served that office from 1875-1876.
Joseph McEwen died at his home on May 1, 1904. He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
