- According to the "Complete Peerage" by Cokayne, Pemborke section, Gilbert sustained serious injuries when the reins of his Italian charger broke ("not without suspicion of foul play") and the horse bolted. Gilbert fell and was dragged by the horse. He later died from severe internal injuries.
