- Samuel Hammond was bon at Sandwich, Mass., in 1655, came with his brother John to Rochester, Mass., about 1680, and settled in the extreme southwesterly part of the town, known as the "West Neck," where he died at a ripe age much respected. He was one of the founders and a prominent member of the first Congregational Church in Rochester, located in the present town of Marion. He was an extensive land-holder, and settled four of his sons around him, Viz: Seth, Josiah, Barnabas and Jedediah, his latter of whom afterwards moved to Scituate. He bought his land of Hugh Cole of Swansey, and he of King Philip, Sachem of Pokanoket, in 1671. [1]
