    Notes
    • Excerpt from "History and Genealogies of the Hammond Families in America Vol. 2":

He went to Crown Point, on arriving at his majority and purchased an interest in the firm of C. F. Hammond & Co., of which he soon became one of the most active members. He was a straightforward upright business man, fond of society, hospitable and charitable. An ardent lover of music and of the beautiful in nature, but of a rather modest and retiring disposition. He was one of the early Republicans and exerted so great an influence in the town that the vote stood 450 for Fremont to 40 for Buchanan. He was not willing to hold office but was once elected to the New York Legislature in spite of himself, having been nominated during his absence and elected in the face of his positive declination to be a candidate. He built and occupied the house in Crown Point since owned and occupied by Edwin S. Bogue. He died very suddenly of bilious pneumonia, leaving a large property which was divided among a large number of legal heirs.

The Elizabethtown, (N. Y.) Post, of Jan. 8, 1858, in a long obituary notice said of him: "The Prosperity of a large community is greatly owing to the kindness and judicious assistance of John C. Hammond, and many can attribute their success and present prosperity to the aid so freely rendered by him. He was quiet, genial, gentlemanly (???) a model citizen in all respects, and he will be more missed by all, rich and poor, high and low, learned and ignorant, good and bad, than any other within our knowledge." He had no children but his niece Lovisa A. Hammond, daughter of his brother, German, and Sarah E. Watson, who married J. W. McVine, of Colton, N. Y., lived in his family for many years and filled the place of daughters to him.
