- Excerpt from "The Spear and the Spindle": Alice of France was the half sister of Philip II "Augustus," King of France 1180-1223. She was betrothed to Richard the Lion-Heart, son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and sent to England at an early age to be reared in the English ways; however, she was never married to Richrd but eventually taken as a mistress by Richard's father, Henry II. She later m. William II, Count of Poitou. He mother was Alix/Adela/Alice of Champagne, third wife of Louis VII.
