Name |
Albert SLAWSON [2] |
- Albert Slawson moved to Claiborne Parish Louisiana in the latter 1840s from Alabama, and he later followed relatives to the Bayou d'Loutre region east of Farmerville. He married in the latter 1850s to a widow, Holland Lee Brantley, and in 1860, they lived on the farm of her parents, Martin Batte Lee and Levincy Albritton Lee near the Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church, about six miles northeast of Farmerville.
Albert Slawson enlisted as a private in a cavalry company formed in late 1863 or early 1864 under Capt. Capers. It is unclear if he served in the 3rd or 5th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment, but in December 1864 at Alexandria, Louisiana, he was transferred to Company C, 17th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Slawson served with his unit in the Pineville and Bayou Cotile areas for the remainder of the War. He received a parole on 9 June 1865.
Holland Lee Slawson died in 1864, and Albert remarried on 17 March 1868 to Mary J. Shaw. He remarried again on 11 June 1869 to Mary E. Thurston. Albert and Mary Slawson lived about eight miles east of Farmerville for the next three decades. In 1870, he worked at a steam sawmill, but in 1880, he farmed. According to Mary's application for a Confederate pension filed in 1903, about April 1895, Albert began to suffer severely from "complications of disease, neuralgia & heart troubles in fact don't know what was the matter with him - was in bed 2 months..." Albert Slawson died on his farm on Saturday, 29 June 1895 and was buried the next day in the "Taylor Church grave yard."
