    • Excerpt from Royal Families Americans of Royal and Noble Ancestry, Vol. 1 Gov. Thomas Dudley: He graduated 1665 from Harvard College and studied theology. However, he did not pursue the ministry but preferred a political career instead. "His subsequent official career was the most brilliant that had then been witnessed in the new world." He was chosen a representative in 1673 for Roxbury and was present Deember 1675 at the battle with the Narragansett Indians (King Philip's War). He was one of two commissioners for the United Colonies from 1677 to 1681. He visited England in 1682 and was selected by Gov. Edmund Andros to his Council. He was made Chief Justice of an unconstitutional Supreme Court, and was subsequently imprisioned. He became President of the Massachusetts Colony and New Hampshire by a commission dated 27 September 1685 from James II, King of England. He went in February 1690 to England, but came back the same year with a commission as Chief Justice of massachusetts. He returned to England again and was made deputy governor of the Isle of Wight under Lord JohnCutts, which position he held for eight years. He returned to New England in 1702 with a commission as governor, which place he served until November 1715.
