- Thomas R. Griffin's father died when he was a young boy, and he was raised by his mother and step-father. He enlisted in Company I, 31st Regiment Louisiana Infantry shortly after the unit surrendered at Vicksburg in July 1863. His first cousin, Lt. Col. Sidney H. Griffin, had originally commanded his company before his election as a regimental officer, and Thomas' half-brother, Charles Henry Griffin, served as its captain for the remainder of the War.
Thomas R. Griffin married in 1871 and had several childen before his death from swamp fever. [1]
