- Excerpt from "The Descendants of Nathaniel Foote Sr. & Elizabeth Deming" by Ellwood Count Curtis:
"The first documented appearance of Josiah in Wethersfield was at the time of his marriage. The next record concerned his real estate. The town records indicate that on 28 February 1641 he owned land in Wethersfield on the river......
This homestead was on the east side of High street, on the north corner of an ancient road leading to the Great Meadow, and the river. It faced the southern extremity of the Common, which stretched north from his house to the river in December 1659 the records show that Josiah moved a few doors south.
An earlier genealogist, Hinman, stated that "He was a gentleman of more than a medium estate for the time in which he lived, and of reputation in the Colony". He was apparently active in public affairs. He was a juror of the Particular Court in 1643, 1649, and 1651, at the Quarter Court in 1664 and 1665, and at the County Court in 1666, 1670 and 1675. He was chosen a constable in 1657 and 1670. He was elected one of the two town surveyors in 1666 and 1673.
Josiah left a will dated 17 November 1683. The inventory of his estate was taken on 5 January 1687 by James Treat and John Buttolph, selectmen of Wethersfield. It was worth 618 pounds 13 shillings and 6 pence. It showed that at his death he owned two home lots and two hundred acres of land. His son Joseph received the house and home lot he was living on along with all other buildings thereon and several other parcels of land. His son Benjamin was to have the old homestead after his mother died and some other land. The daughters received shares of the "moveable estate", as was the custom at that time. Among the items mentioned were a great chest, two bibles, and other books.
