  • Name John BULKELEY  [1
    • He was Deputy for colchester to the Conn. General Court at twenty-eight sessions, from May 1729 to May 1743 inclusive (except May 1739 session), being Clerk of the House, Oct. 1734 and May 1736. He served on many important committees, including the committee to revise the laws in 1742. He served as Assistant for eleven terms, from 1743 until his death in 1753. He was often Agent for the Colony between 1738 and 1743, particularly in the Mohegan Indian Controversy, and was Colonial Agent to Great Britain in Oct. 1745, and a Commissioner on the Mass. boundary, May 1747. He was commissioned Capt. of the 1st Company, Colchester, May 1732; Capt. of the 2d Troop, Hartford Count, May 1736; and Col. of the 12th Regt., Oct. 1739. He was a Justice of the Peace for Hartford County from 1731 to 1742 inclusive; Judge of Probate, District of East Haddam, from 1741 to 1753 inclusive, and Judge of the Superior Court for eight terms, from 1745 to 1752 inclusive.

In the religious dissensions which resulted in Conn. from the Great Revival, Mr. Bulkeley was a staunch supporter of the stringent measures of government; and to this attitude he is said by the historian Backus to have owed his elevation to the Council, in 1743, in the stead of a sympathizer with the revivalists. A career of wide usefulness was interrupted by his death, from an apoplectic fit, at the age of 48. [1]
