    As a boy he went to sea with his father, and rose to be a captain, retiring in 1851, at the age of twenty-three. Subsequently he took up gold-mining in California and Oregon. He and his partner established a store in Jacksonville, Ore., about 1856, and operated a pack train of fifty mules between that mining town and Crescent City, Cal. they had many narrow escapes from hostile Indians. Captain Howland afterwards engaged in quartz mining in California, and later was a photographer in Syracuse, New York, and San Francisco.

    Benjamin married Alice Augusta GIFFORD on 18 Oct 1854. Alice (daughter of Shubael Henry GIFFORD and Lucy Augusta CLARK) was born on 18 Oct 1836 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachusetts; died on 14 Oct 1883 in Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts; was buried in Congregational Church Cemetery, New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachustts.
