  1. 1.  Moses GODFREY was born on 27 Jan 1667/8 in Eastham, Massachusetts (son of George GODFREY and ? UNKNOWN); died on 16 Apr 1743 in Chatham, Massachusetts.

    He settled at Monomoit about 1695, in that part called Cotchpinicut (Old Harbor) in the vicinity of the farm of William Nickerson, son of the first William. he was early interested in religious affairs and was a special friend of Rev. John Latimer, who remembered him and his wife in his will. When the church was organized in 1720, he and his wife were among the first to join. He soon, however, found himself at odds with Rev. Joseph Lord, the pastor, on account of the attitude of the latter towards Rev. Samuel Osborn and the church at Pochet (now Orleans) and was excommunicated, together with Mr. Elisha Mayo. They both were at once received again by the Pochet church, to which they had formerly belonged. Mr. Godfrey was selectman in 1710 and held other offices. He was a substantial citizen and reared a large family, which furnished energetic citizens to the town for nearly two centuries.

    Moses married Deborah COOKE about 1700 in Eastham, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. Deborah (daughter of Josiah COOKE and Deborah HOPKINS) was born on 14 Feb 1678 in Eastham, Massachusetts; died on 23 Apr 1743 in Chatham, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
